View Full Version : Mounting Rims to Hubs ?

Greetings:
The question is, why are there two differant sized mounting holes in my hubs?
Ok, I could figure that there are differant sized holes in differant rims, Bigger rim = bigger mounting stud. But why a threaded bolt, and a nut ?
My kit came with a bolt (call them studs) and a locking nut, am I suppost to use the lock nut on the back even if it's threaded into a threaded hole?

Am I making any sense here?
I know you guys know what I'm talking about.

Hello, I myself use them as studs screwing them in the back side of the hubs and use the nuts to outside of rim. That way all you have to do is remove the nuts and remove wheel from hub without having to unscrew the bolts from hub everytime you pull the wheel off the hub!

Hey Gadget,

Moto is correct. Install the studs from the back side and slip the wheels over the studs and then put the nuts on the ends, just like you car in a sense.

Hey Gadget, Here is a trick that I always do when installing wheels. Go to Lowe's and get 24 Nylon Washers to put on before you install the wheels and on before you put the Lug nuts on to protect the wheels. It works great...I do it on all the racers that I build....I hate paying $150 for wheels and then mess them up! If you use these just check to see that they are tight before you ride. I have never had any problem with them coming loose ...just be safe. :lush:

Hey Guys...
Those are great ideas.
I don't know why couldn't see the obvious.
Of course the bolts would be the Wheel Studs and the nuts are "Lug Nuts"
Its all clear now. Yup, just like a car.
I first read Motos idea, and thought it will scratch my nice new rims, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do, then Snakester comes up with the nylon washer idea. I'll use both ideas.

Thanks
