At my local hardware store they have water pumps with a 5.5hp briggs motor with a horizontal shaft. I think this will work good for a bsr but im new to the whole bsr thing and was just wondering what you guys think?

New motors are available from several sources instead of buying a whole water pump system or something. Check out eBay, Harbor Freight, or even your local lawn mower shop.

yea i guess that would be the better way to go and save me pry $100.

Which "knock-off" motor is the best? or is it just best to get a real briggs/tecumseh/etc.?

Haven't had much experience yet with the knock-off engines except the one I used on my wife's little buggy. It is a no-name knock-off from eBay and is a 6.5 hp Honda clone electric start. Thus far it has been okay for her use. I did have to disconnect the low oil sensor as it shorted out inside the engine block and the pull start is junk. Thankfully, it is electric start so it starts fine just don't have a back-up starting system in case the battery goes dead. I've heard that the Sterling brand is good which is also a Honda clone type engine. Don't know of a Briggs or Tecumsah clone.

When you buy a name brand engine you do know exactly what you are getting. I guess it would boil down to personal preference. I went with a clone because I could buy it for less than $200 bucks including shipping and get electric start. A comparable Honda would have cost around $450. I also personally prefer Hondas due to their quality, easy starting, and smooth running.

Hey Jt, With Spring coming on check out Yard Sales for motors...I buy anything with a motor on it from leaf blowers to lawn edgers. The first racer that I built has a 3hp Briggs off of an edger...I built it 3yrs. ago and gave it to a buddy's son...it has 15"tires all around and had a clutch on it for 2 1/2 years ...we changed it to a TAV last September and it runs great and is still going strong...It's bullet proof, not great on hole shots , but it will run 35mph after it gets wound up. The Briggs are easy to mount and easy to hook up the accelerator...Good luck!!! Snakester:cheers:

you dont want the water pump engine as it has a different shaft which is a 5/8" threaded shaft instead of the 3/4. Makes it a nightmare trying to get a clutch mounted. Stay with the standard engines with the 3/4" or even 1" shafts :)
