Hey everyone, here is a new design we are working on. It's called the Classic Cruiser.

We are hoping to have it finished in the next few weeks. We will also be making a set of plans for the new design.

Mike, looks good ... can't wait to see it come together step by step. What is your thought behind this one? Is it still going to be a classice Barstool type setup or what direction are you taking it?

Also .... on your tires you use. Do those rain tires toss up a lot of road debris on you when you're ride'n your stool? I'm using new slicks and I get a lot of sand and pebbles on me. Wanted to know about the treaded ones you ues. Thanks,
Brian

Some kart tires...especially soft compound ones....and even more so ones off e-bay that are used and were doped with traction compound are soft enough to pick up small rocks....I have a set of both rain and slicks..the rain tires seem to be harder or anyway do not pick up rocks...I eventually bought all new stuff ( hard compound slicks ) and they stay clean....The tread helps in the grass...THANKS

Hey Docgreen,

My thoughts on this design are to have a cool looking design and make it simple to build. As of now there are only 3 different angles (45 degrees or less) on the frame and when done there should only be about 25 total parts (including the side foot rests).

I have shortened the wheel base a bit to give it a tough looking stance and will be designing a front bumper and maybe a rear which will look pretty sharp and also simple to build.

One of the things I did on this design was to make the steering column removable with 4 bolts so it can be shipped via ups completely welded. The home builder can opt to weld the steering column instead.

I will be working on the bsr again today and will put up some more photos this afternoon.

As for the tire I am using, I don't ever recall anything flying up on me except when I go threw a puddle. I have driven the bsr in sand and grass and never really had anything fly up. The tires are considered a soft compound.

I know for a fact at the drag strip you can always hear the rocks flying up into the cars wheel wells from the massive slicks they use. Might just be the flat tire design.

How about anyone else?!?! Does anyone else use the treaded tires on the board?

I got a set of used slicks off ebay that were already mounted on new rims. i noticed yesterday after riding that my shoes were FULL of pebbles and sand. The city had just repaved my street, and there is an unusually high amount of pebbles in the road. I also got a set of the rain tires and intend to put them on after I use the remaining rubber on the slicks.

I'm running slicks on my BSR and haven't had anything come up and hit me except the pavement on one occasion. LOL But, hey i wonder what a set of finders would look like?
Update: hope to get the first coat of paint on mine today. I'm going with the color changing paint job. it will change from blue to red in sunlight. Then I'm going to try my airbrush at doing some real flames on the tank and running boards.
have a beer and wish me luck.

Hey Warpaint,

I never noticed how fat your front tire were. How does the steering handle with the large tires?

I got the frame finished welded today except for the rear bearing hangers and front spindle mount brackets.

I still need to make the foot rests and I am thinking about a removable cooler rack on the back behind the stool.

I am still not sure about the front bumper/nose.. Anyone got any input on that?

Ok, I could not stop thinking about the front end design, so I mocked up an idea I had out of wood.

I am going to cut the frame off right at the cross support for the front wheels and attach this new front nose in place of what I have now.

Mike, I might have an idea for your bumper ..... let me play with it and see how it looks here. I'll shoot ya an email or post a pic if it looks worth a crap. LOL.

Hey Mike
It handles like a dream. I just couldn't belive it. I can let go of the steering and it runs straight. It was the only set i had. but hey it works. I will have to take some new pics of it and post them.OH this is a pic of my daughter shopping.

I managed to get a little more time in the last few days on the new ride. I was going to add the foot rests today, but the blade on the band saw broke again. So tomorrow I hope to get them done.

I still have not got the front end done and I figured I would save it for last now to bring the whole frame together.

Below are a couple of photos I took today...

I got a few more hours in today and finished up the foot rests and the front nose. I think it turned out pretty cool looking myself.

I still need paint and the diamond plate added and a few small things like wheelie bar and a removable beer cooler rack.

Below are a couple of photos I took today when I was done.

Looks good Mike. I like it. Makes me want to change mine. Where do you plan on sticking your logo at? I put it around the seat on mine. Keep up the great work.

Hey Warpaint,

Well my seat swivles, so I am not sure about putting it on there. I might have to make a little hanger on the back for the logo.

Good question...

Isn't that the thing Stool-Sample? Building a faaaaaaaaaaaaaast bsr? I believe if you're going to put a motor on a barstool, then do it right and go big and fast!

The sprocket is a 41T I used on my other bsr. I have not had a chance to run it wide open with the gps yet, but my previous sprocket was a 54T. I notice a big difference on the top end and only lost a little low end because of the 6.5 HP engine.

Finally, 3 weeks on the drawing board / garage floor, and I finally got the new design finished.

I was able to take it out for an hour and ride it all over. The steering is awesome due to a new design of the steering column internals, and the over all handling was great.

I popped some wheelies, rode on the side wheels and did some off roading in the back yard.

I have only attached one photo today because the sun light was in a bad spot to get some good photos towards the evening.

All that is left is a wheelie bar and a removable cooler rack for the back and then into paint and finish.

The new design is called the Classic Cruiser for 2006.

Hey Mike,
Where did you get those brake levers? Are they at wal-mart? I dismembered my bike that was just hanging around in the garage, but I like the ones you have there on the "classic cruiser".

Hey mbean I use 64 and we really like the 72 tooth gears with the same 6.5 hp motor and torq. Kinda makes for a scarry but fin ride!

Josullivan,

I had to brake down and get nickled & dimed at my local gokart supply for the levers. They come from thoes stand up gas scooters. I think we paid around $40 for the pair.

We also got the handle grips from the same place. They are not in the photo because I am waiting for the paint to be done.

p.s. Did you get the problem with the clutch figured out on your BSR? In the classic cruiser build, I used the same 41T sprocket for the build with the same engine (6.5 HP Techumseh) and I can easily pull the front wheels off the ground.

Woodchuck,

I first started out with a 54T and was pretty happy with it. But I really was interested in more speed. The setup I use with the tork-a-verter has a lot of torque on the bottom end with the 41T, I only noticed a small bit of difference in the mid range power with the 41T -vs- 54T. The additional speed is worth the it!

The 64T and 72T seem a bit low for a 6.5 HP engine. Are you entering in a barstool racer pull off? What kind of speeds can you get from those sprockets? And are you using a tork-a-verter?

I have pulled a dully with a 5th wheel camper hooked up to it. As far as speed my police buddys clocked me at 57mph with the tork a verter and 64 tooth spocket no govener on the motor. with alky for combustion.

I have been thinking of removing the govener for a while. I know that will kick it up a bit. And I am sure the alky played a nice role in power. Can you image the speeds with a 40T sprocket?!?!?

Congrats on the speeds, not too bad! I was riding mine this evening and it felt like I was really moving down the street. I am going to have to locate my GPS and do some speed run tests.

Mike,
I no longer have the problem with the clutch. I applied a little oil to the guts and it doesn't do it anymore. I still think I should adjust the idle. When I first hooked the throttle cable up, I had to manually push the throttle lever on the motor about half-way up then tighten the screw to hold the cable snug. Is this what you had to do? The motor won't throttle up unless it is in this position. It only seems to have about 1" of movement. What cha think?

Mike Bean

Josullivan,

I had to do the same thing with my Tech engine. I also had to bring the idle down a little bit because my bsr was trying to creep on me.

I wish there was a little more movement in the throttle, but oh well.. Let me ask you this. Did you have to stretch out the throttle return spring? Mine was so strong I could barely get the throttle wide open until I stretched it.

look on the clutch bell... you can get up to a 24 bell.... think about it, a 40 tooth rear gear and a 20 tooth bell... thats 2:1 and it will haul the mail... :blob_red:

D&J,

Lets talk about what kind of acceleration you will get with a 2:1 ratio? I do not know my ratio, but I am pretty sure it is not 2:1 and I lack a little bit in the mid range area already and I weigh 210 lbs.

It would take a few feet "100'" to get up to speed but it would fly over 100 mph if you dare........

mbean,
I didn't have to stretch my spring on the throttle. i probably should try it though. I just thought that it could be part of the reason that its so hard to pull the throttle with my handbrake setup. I'm trying to get a thumb throttle off ebay right now, but keep getting outbid by ghost bidders who have zero feedback. I wish people would just decide what they'd take for it then set the price at that. Damn ebay!!!

Mike Bean

Josullivan,

I am sure your spring is the same as mine. Just clamp it in a vise and give it a few stretches untill it has very little tension when hooked up. I can operate my throttle with one finger now.

I was able to get a better photo today of the new design I finished last week. Tomorrow I will be building a removeable cooler rack and adding the wheelie bar.

New plans will be out in a few weeks. I have all the CAD drawings finished and all I need is to get the build photos and the remaining text.
