Well, Im net to building barstools. I was recently assigned my final project for my Robotics Engineering class, which was to build somthing. After hearing stories from my dad back when he was in high school and mabe an electric barstool for his auto shop class, I asked my teacher If I could build one, and he said sure.

This past week I have been researching motors, chassis design and fab etc. However I would like to have a varible speed control instead of an on/off switch for the stool. Anyone have a twist throttle/thumb throttle set-up on an electric barstool that works well, and isnt too expensive to buy/make? If so, what parts did you use, and where did you find them? Also, any electrical drawings would be awesome! Thanks in advance for your help!

Here are a few sights to get you started.

I have some experience here....you can use 12 or 24 vdc motor...wheelchair motors work fine but scooter transaxles from e-bay have differential built in and are easy to mount...Kart hubs can be installed with bushings to match the shaft to the hub....use a PWM ( pulse width modulator ) controller...cheap ones that power cheap scooters or better ones like on mobility equipment...both have variable speed capabilities...there are several throttle options also.....good luck

Thank you for the help! Next period I have my robotics class for which this project is for, and Ill see what kinds of PWM controlloers we might have. I was planning on using a starter motor from a car as the drive motor, and Today after school im picking up some free (but used) sprockets and chain from a local dirt bike shop, and I am going to make it a solid rear axle. And ideas against a solid rear axle other than bad steering at slow speeds?

the slow speed steering is a issue but i have a solid axle on mine and i dont mind... if you have the power you just snap the throttle and the back end swings wherever you want (not on pavement)

good luck with the build
