I'm kicking around an idea to build a three wheel offroad machine. I want it to have two wheels up front with a single rear wheel. I want to use large tires to somewhat cushion the ride. I'm not sure if I want to incorporate shocks, or just rely on the tires to soften the ride. Has anybody ever just had an idea similar to this and just started to build it. I feel as though i've had my motorized kart building cherry popped building my BSR, and want to take it in another direction for my second project. Any Thoughts??? :blob_red: :blob_red: :blob_red:

Josullivan,
I think you should build a highly over powered bsr with a one cylinder snowmobile engine and use the tork-a-verter from the snowmobile to go with it. Now that would be a cool project and might be my bsr idea for fun.
As for the 3 wheels stuff, it depends on how big of wheels you are going to be using. I think Honda discontinued the 3 wheeler design because of roll overs.
Do you want to make an off-road bsr? If so I would go with the 4 wheel version and lift it a bit and add some wheel base and see what happens.

Ya the three wheel design would be cool but it would be unstable at high speeds i would think. I am working on a lifted B.S.R something you could take through a fresh cut corn field and rip up with it with out hurting a low racer style.

I would think that traction would be an issue if the single wheel was pushing. All other off road 3 wheelers drive both rear wheels...just a thought

Hey if you want a three wheel design, I just saw a BSR built from an electric wheel chair on ebay. It goes about 5 MPH and steers from the two rear wheels...

Okay, i've been convinced that the three wheeler with one rear wheel is a bad idea... I've not heard anyone say "man that sounds cool", so it must not be. I was looking on the web for plans on building an offroad atv, and the only one i've seen is this one called "the Grasshopper". Has anybody heard of this before? It looks like it would be easy to build, and provide the offroad excitement that a BSR can't.

Josullivan,
Here is a link to a pretty cool off road toy you could build. I found it a while back when looking for some plans. The guy offers the plans for free and they appear to be very well done.

I have also attached a photo of the finished design.
Hope this helps.

I think a trike set up like that would work ok if u put anti sway bar on frt steering. If u started with a VW u could use the wish bones in the rear to mount the back half of a motorcycle with a wide tire to. Just an IDEA. Drako :)

Hi Jo
Just as a peculiarity. Over the years several trikes have been made here in Sweden with two front and one rear wheel. Common behaviour is instability when not going straight forward. Engines vary from 50-200 cc. A good trike in working condition can be bought for 400-600 USD. A few have been ATV converted. Couldn't find one on the net today, but I'll keep my eyes open.

Easiest way is to buy one and import it (New business idea perhaps). There are lots of 'em arround at competitive pricing since most of them are owned by kids 15-17 yerars old.

Hey bro, I like your idea, im starting a T-Rex kart like what you are thinking of, but this is made from a 550cc 65 HP GPZ motorcycle engine, and 1.25"x1.25"x.125" square tubing. Im still on the design process and I am selling stuff to buy everything. There is not really much information out there, but you can look for the T-Rex, it is a 3 wheeler with a 1200cc suzuki engine, and weights about 500 kg. It can go from 0-60 in 4. something seconds, and has a maximum g cornering of 1.9g´s.
However this is designed for track racing and probably if it is offroad it would be very inestable. Look for it on Altavista, I think they are selling them for around 50,000$.
Oh by the way, the sweet part of this design is that you wouldn´t need a differential to do some sharp turns ;) and you can just put one wheel on the rear and avoid having to buy another (heyy money is expensive :P)
The pics I include are my chassis designed till now(it is upside down). Ohh, notice the yellow ball? thats the center of gravity ;).
I already have figured out the way for the rear but I havent done it on Autocad drawing. Its kinda hard because im self learner. But this semester I would have classes on the university.
Keep posting, ohh, and the 2nd and 3rd pic are from a real T-rex

Now that is something I could use around here. Do you have a name for these?? So I can look it up on the net and such. How much does it weigh?? Could dismantal it and ship as parts. Does the forward part tip forward to get in?? Just need one to take a mold off of. Maybe an electric drive. This is getting interesting.........Terry

If you have good idea - keep the lid on. I will try and post as many links as possible. The vehicle is called shopper (why not) The risk is tha if you start enquiring in english the prices will rocket. Today the shopper is affordable as I mentioned - but if there is a US interest they will soon cost like old Volvos and Saabs You can study all adds on www.blocket.se (http://www.blocket.se) search for "shopper".

I'd be more inclined to have the turd wheel in the front, like from a bicycle. it would seem to cut down costs quite a bit.
