Wouw that´s wayy to cool...

I´d kill for looking at those drag tractors run!

you planning on making anyone soon thunder?

Thunderbolt51
September 30th, 2007, 12:01 AM
I must admit to serious thinking about it maybe one with a chromemoly tube chassis, I like the much lower center of gravity compared to the bsr's. I already have many of the components to build one only running an old Pro Stock Alcohol Kohler pulling engine (around 50 horsepower) instead of the bike engines used in many of those drag racers. I already have the components to build another bsr but haven't had the time to start that one yet what with a few puller projects to finish. I do have a habit of starting one just to see it in the rough and then going back to finish other projects, gives me time to see how i want to proceed. It sure is fun thinking about all these toys, they have a hell of a power to weight ratio, hang on tight !!!

i really like the orange racer at the bottom (and at page top too) with the fabbed fenders and frame and would like to do something like that, thinkin',,,,hhhhmmmmm.... my favorite color too !! lol..

elvergon
September 30th, 2007, 01:37 PM
Yup I think that it is the best looking...

If you got all the components, hell yeah! it´s time to make a great thread... please don´t forget pics...

if you got the 50 hp engine, which transmision/clutch/TAV do you use for that one?

at least bike engines come with their own...

I would probably use the 94C Comet torque converter and a 50 series chain, gotta find the right sprockets. not sure which tire I want, Carlisle slicks (low speed rating), Hoosier slicks or American Racer grooved tires, already have an aluminum axle 1.250 and four bolt hubs and hyd. disc brake setup. I'll be looking for a chassis or mower hood and fender deck that I like, I'd like to use a Cub Cadet lawn tractor to go with all of my Cub Cadet garden tractor pullers. I also have a 60 cube all aluminum Onan 2 cylinder pulling engine I could use. decisions, decisions,,,hhhmmmm. Hey Chuck, it'd be nice if you were building one too, I have extra pulling engines.......Geo

the only mower race I've seen so far (exhibition race) had one guy with a 20hp. vertical Briggs OHV that was so fast that he rode around the outside of the groomed track on the grass (there weren't any straw bales to fence him in) so he could stay out of the traffic (about 10 or so racers) and he still blew them away, it was fun to watch. Problem was that the track was too dry and they were racing in a huge cloud of dust.

speeddemon0308
October 2nd, 2007, 04:10 PM
haha 20hp is what you think!! those motors when built can produce 40+ hp with like.. 60 foot pounds tourqe which is insane for the weight of the mowers!!!
yeah are club.. we dont race if its redicuously dusty.. we willr ace in the rain.. as long as there is no lightning which gets fun sometimes!

Thunderbolt51
October 3rd, 2007, 09:44 AM
yeh, I knew 20hp is what it started out as, it sure had a nice rumble to it and sure was fun watching him blow by the others sideways !! We've pulled in the rain, although fun while doin it (slingin' TALL roostertails of wet clay), it's actually dangerous (clay is like grease when wet) and a real pain in the butt to clean everything afterwards (very time consuming). Sometimes looked like we were in a battle in a mudhole with everything covered with the stuff.

Thunderbolt51
October 3rd, 2007, 09:48 AM
you have a nice lookin' racer Speed Demon, what do you have in it drivetrain wise ??

speeddemon0308
October 3rd, 2007, 04:32 PM
yeah clay is very slippery when wet!! but i think the horse track screening are worse to clean off.. once there dry its almost like cement!!!

it goes from a 6" engine pulley threw the stock clutch system to a 3" pulley on a Peerless 700 series gear box ( see pictures)
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e276/speeddemon0308/100_1028.jpg its got a top case on it.. i dotn have a pic with it on but.. all it does is pretty well cover it up and support the shifter..

then a 13 tooth sproket to a 45 tooth on the axel.. and my race gear.. the gearing from the transmition is a 2.5:1 ratio

if i was crazy enought id use a 16HP v twin.. one of those trannys on a barstool.. WEE!!!

and also all the blue stuff on the gears is just some grease.. i added about.. 6-8 OZ of amsoil 80-90W synthetic gear oil and i havent broken that all year... yet!!

Thunderbolt51
October 4th, 2007, 11:14 AM
Speed D., thanks for the info, great photo, i wondered what they looked like inside. Do you know what kind of brands or mower models used these Peerless 700 transaxles ??

speeddemon0308
October 4th, 2007, 01:25 PM
um... there transmitions.. not transaxels ( transaxels acaully are all one piece and have the axles with it.. ) um.. the 700's came in more less rear engine riders, SOME in the earlyer MTD's there getting hard to find around my area.. i have 3 extras sittin here as parts and trannys muhaha!!! and ive been offerd 60$ for one and i was like nope.. i need it cant fnd em anymore!!!

October 4th, 2007, 11:39 PM
well heres some pics of my mower hahah

the 1st to is what it will look like after i get my vtwin for it ( but it will have back tires aha) the other to are me takin 3rd at the canadion nationals supermod B groupe. its got a 9 hp honda with a noram star clutch to a jack shaft. i run agains vtwisn and mostly 16s and 18s for the size motor it goes pretty good. it needs some fiberglass work tho. thats motor will be in the barstool were buildin. it will have a slide carb and its got some head work so its got alot more compression ( shaved head 60 thou welded comp chamber welded the dish in valves and right now runni race fuel aha)

i guess i'm thinking of a different Peerless transaxle (not just a transmission) series i read about awhile ago somewhere that mower racers are using, i forget the number, maybe a 721 or something like that.

Derek, your racer should be a riot to drive with that twin in it, bet you can hardly wait. Thanks for sharing the photos and keep up the good work.

Thunderbolt51
October 5th, 2007, 09:50 AM
here's a site that has a cool audio of a modified V twin, they look real cool too with the dual carbs;

http://www.performancevtwins.com/

fox_racin4
October 5th, 2007, 04:51 PM
haha yeah i cant wait. the guy im gettin it from needs to find a block befor he can built it. its just a good built stock engine..................for now haha

it used to have a bottom shaft twin in it but it had carb issues and yeah... the twin thats in there is a bottom shaft but tilted on its side. i can run a bottom shaft vtwin casue its preassuer lubed but i need to change hte oil pick up and hte carb and make a mounting braket. rather go with a real side shaft casue after the mower it will make a nice gokart or barstool engine lol
