Hi all
Was just wondering if anyone here has built a
Aluminum BSR frame.
If so, what size tube was used?
Thanks

Hi all
I am in the process building an Aluminum Bsr frame.
We will be using 1-1/4 6061 box tube, welded with 4043 alloy. This frame will be a modified big cheese cruiser design, pictures to come.

There is a reason why BSR's are not build from aluminium, because the welds are prone to cracking! under a static load with vibration. I also believe that the 6000 series is one that is not weldable.

I think the idea sounds pretty cool. I am sure there is a way to do it, just use a thick wall, or maybe build it with tubing to added strength.

Don't see any reason why not. Aluminum welds require more attention to detail but you already know that. I personally think that with the proper preparation aluminum is actually easier to weld. Just my opinion........Terry

Sorry, my bad, it's the 2000 (copper) and 7000 (zinc) that are not weldable.

I've been running an indoor karting track for the last 3 years and I had some heavy steel double karts that were causing me trouble. They couldn't make it up the hill of the bridge. I decided to get them made out of Aluminum.
The prototype was made with square and worked alot better but was still a little heavy. We hired this fab company to make it pretty and make it light.
The new bouble is a thing of beauty and one person can pick up the bare frame with one hand.
The only draw back is that they have been found to not put up with too much before breaking, cracking and giving us some problems. I've been fabing from some time and I know that when you start to concentrate too much on beauty you tend to remove some strength.
I would never spend the money again on the aluminum frame...I would just not bother having doubles but I got them now and I'll just keep fixing them.
On the good not, I'm sure that you're not going to have a bunch of 300lbs guys beating the bar stools into each other so it might just last.
