Hey,

Just got a Lincoln "Tombstone" given to me....An AC-225.....

Anybody used 7024 sticks with any luck....commonly referred to as "idiot" sticks.....seemed to be right up my alley, as I've never welded before....

Any insight would be appreciated....

Most rods with the prefix 70XX are usually used for high strength applications (Beams, columns). For a BSR a 1/16 or 1/8 -6011 would be a good choice. Hope this helps.

Hi 7024 rods is used to weld on dc machines on flat welds.7014 rods work well with that type of machine all you have to do is drag the rod slow an watch the puddle if the puddle narrows means your speeding up if the puddles get wider mean your slowing down. set the machine 75 - 90 on 3/32 and 110 -135 on 1/8 rods.6011 works well also no as strong 6013 will work on thin metal. If your going to do alot of welding on 1" tubing I would invest in miller 140 mig with a gas bottle 75/25 gas with solid wire .023 or .030 wire size you can't go wrong with it.Miller makes a good machine Linc dose also but much more money.I also meant to tell you the 3 number on the rods. 1 means you can weld flat up hill, over head.2 means you can only weld on flat.

Actually the 7024 rod is not an idiotu stick., In fact it can be a bit tricky if you have never run it before. Just remember that the 7024 (also refered to as jetrod) is a horizontal rod only. It will not weld up or down nor overhead due to the weight of the filler rod. It is not a high penetrating rod either so if your going to use it be sure you use it as a cap for 5p or even 6011 if you have to. Also the cracker box you have is a straight ac machine and doesnt run any 70 series rod (unless its 70xx ac) worth a hoot. Good luck with your welding
