I'm very new to barstool racing and go karts in general. What keeps the axle from moving from left to right?

The set screws on the axle bearings will hold the axle in place. Make sure you use quality bearings. I`ve already broke 2 on my stool! Heff

do the axles have a keyway also? what keeps the sprocket from moving left to right, is it just keys and set screws?

Here`s a couple pics of my set up. In the close up picture you can see a collar on the bearing. It has a set screw on it that you tighten with a allen wrench.

No, those are for added security to keep things in place. For instance , when I took my stool for it`s first ride the keyway on the sprocket slid out and I spun the sprocket on the shaft. I added a 3rd set screw through the sprocket and into the key to hold it. Heff

The bearings for the rear axle will either come with a locking collar similar to mine or they will have 2 set screws on each bearing to hold them tight to the axle.http://barstoolracersupply.com/product_info.php?products_id=35&osCsid=21eec766b82ab38f470571394ff86eb3 Heff

Yes, you can purchase a 1" locking collar. But I guess I`m not following why you would need it.Hardware stores carry lots of sizes of steel locking collars.

No, keep your set screws away from the keyway slot.
