i just finished my barstool racer and it doesn't seem to have any guts, i could go full throttle and it will barely go? is this the clutch? i have a 53 tooth rear sprocket, 12 tooth clutch and its a 3.5hp briggs and stratton.

hey man,
i had a 3.5 briggs on mine when i first built it, and i had to push on the front tires to get started. i am not sure what size sprocket i had on it then. i upgraded to a 5 hp, and now i have plenty of power. a larger rear sprocket will give you more take off power, but will cut down on you top end.

i still want top speed haha, and the engine was a freebie so i figured i'd use it the thing goes like 20 mph with the sprocket set up, i guess i will have to experiment with sprocket sizes etc

could it be the way the clutch is on? it didn't have any arrows for turning direction so i stuck it on the only way i could with the sprocket outwards, because i cut the end of the crankshaft off cause it was screwed

Looks like you had some fun with it in the snow! Wish we would get some so I could "experiment"... As far as the engine goes, a TAV-2 made all the difference in the world for my 180 lbs. (but I did start with a 6.5 Briggs) Continue having fun with it for now, and perhaps build in improvements for your next one!!

thanks, yeah it was alot of fun, i just purchased a few more sprockets, so once they get here i'll have a 56 66 72 and 86, should be enough to experiment and find what i like etc. I would go to a TAV2 but the engines output shaft is 5/8, the TAV doesn't come in that size, i could make a sleeve, but thats too far ahead to bother thinking about haha

Hey JChatt, I`ve got a 3.5 hp Honda with a 12 tooth clutch and a 72 tooth rear and I have no power at take off. If I don`t start with the front wheels straight I barely go. I think most of the problem is in the standard clutch. I`m switching to a TAV so I get power at take off and top speed. I`m sure it doesn`t matter which way the clutch is on, I have mine on so the clutches are exposed just for the chain clearance. Heff

yeah the wheels have to be straight for mine too, the only problem i have is the TAV isn't made for a 5/8 shaft

mabey even ungovern it so that you can gear it a little lower to have more bottom end.. and since its ungovernd.. youll make up for it by reving it up a little bit higher.. or if you want to leave it governd.. adjust the governer..

It`s a Comet Torque Converter 30 Series Driven for a 5/8" shaft. I don`t know a lot about them though maybe it`s not what you`re looking for.

the sprocket is suposed to be out. i would swap the 3.5 for at least a5hp. you can get them pretty cheap. ive got 5hp racing motor convert from alchol back to gas and it screams. but u can find used briggs for cheap.

hey speed, I have a 3 1/2 on my bsr, before i put the tav on i ran a 12t/60t, it drove fine but didnt have the power that a tav would. It took off ok but lacked the power for wheelies or burn outs. After installing the TAV it has no problem doing wheelies or burnouts..I've also takin the governor off. hope this helps

when we built ours.. we had to make it kinda long so we can fit the jackshaft and have rom for a manual belt cluttch when my brother steals the clutch for his racer.. so it wont do wheelies.. but it does some NICE burnouts!!! i posted a vid a little while back.. but weve done some better ones.. and its fun to play around with when the roads are wet.. WEE!!!

but without the TAV to have tourque and some top speed.. its hard to do.. we geared for more top speed then tourque..

i believe i found my take off problem, 12 tooth clutch and 72 tooth rear sprocket, takes off good, maintains good speed, well if i had it maxed out, i need to adjust the throttle cables haha
