I need some ideas on what is a good way to shorten my stool. Here are some pics of my build, see this post:

I would like to shorten it considerably (the part above the ring). How can I do this without hacking up the stool and grinding off the chrome, along with having welds that are visible on the legs? Any ideas greatly appreciated. stooly

I cut about 4 inches out of both of mine and welded it, but the welds are visible on one. The other i grinded smooth and powdercoated it black, and you can hardly see the welds. I emailed a guy today about a 24 inch high stool that i saw on the internet, because i want the black one to be chrome again without seeing the welds. can't remember the sight, but if he emails me back I could get you more info if you like.

If you hear back about the 24" high stool let me know. That sounds perfect. I think mine measures roughly 14" between the stool legs if I remember correctly. Thanks Wayfat! Stooly

Stooly:
Without wanting to go to the expense of having your stool powdercoated or rechromed, you options become somewhat limited. One idea, is to remove the ring on your stool and make that your first cut. "Section" out however much you want it shortened, then re-weld the legs. That would put the weld bead directly behind the ring. Then just re-drill to mount the ring. The weld would be visible from "inside" the stool and depending on how hot your running your welder, you can "blue" the chrome to where it is visible.
24-28 inch stools can be readily found on the net, Ebay usually has some.

A little rich for my blood. too bad, because it is just what i was looking for. I am sure there are cheaper ones out there though.

I had a local race car shop fab me a new stool base. I needed to clear the motor and needed 14 in legs. I took a drawing of what I needed to hem and an hour later and 12 feet of material, I had a new stool base. I brought it home, and fit it to the stool. I had to chop off 6 in of each leg. I used two of the cutoffs for foot pegs.
