Hi, I built my engine while searching for BSR parts. I have an old 5hp B & S that a friend of mine gave me. I rebuilt it with new rings and gaskets, but it did not come with a tank or carb. While looking around the web I saw the same type engine with what looked like a honda carb on it. Not knowing better I took and old honda 250 carb from a "big red" three wheeler and made my own intake. This thing runs like a bat out of , well you know where. I now do not have a govener to keep the engine from over tach-ing. Does anyone know if I am going to throw a rod in this thing or will it run fine as long as I don't get too wild with it? Thank you all for the great information.

about 5000 rpms would be pusing it to the limit

Thank you for the reply.
Is there a tach that will work on a 5hp B & S? That would be too cool!
I could mount it to the steering shaft sleve just in front of or behind.
I got the wheels sand blasted and one side painted today. "Frankenstool" is under construction. I will put on the rest of the paint tomorrow.

Skeeter,
Brad is right, 5,000 is a little in the "Danger Zone" with a stock BS rod. These stock rods are cast aluminum and if it is very old, are prone to breakage. I build Hi-Proformance 4 cycle engines mostly for the Kart Racers. There were a bunch of rods on the market that Briggs had made in China. I broke several of these on the Dyno under 5,000 rpm's. If you want to twist your motor harder, I would suggest a billet rod from ARC or Horstman. I use these rods(ARC) in my open motors that turn over 10,000rpm on alky/nitro. The ARC is around $50.00 but will save the whole motor. When you break a rod in the 5hp the first thing it does is break the camshaft, then when the crank starts hitting all the pieces, it wants to come out the front of the block. If you plan on twisting your motor, I would go with a billet rod, especially with the gearing most guys are using.

Thank ya'll very much for the replies. I did remove all of the casting marks from the stock rod when I was building the engine. I polished the rod real smooth. I learned from an old Harly builder that doing this would increase the strenth of the rod. I am not looking to over crank this engine, maybe the next BS I build will have a super engine. I guess I will have to hold off on the tach too. The $100.00 would be better spent on tires, rims and hubs at this point. I will just watch it close and and not over speed the engine. Look on the bright side, I only have $35.00 invested in the engine for gaskets and rings. The rest was just time in the shop. As I see it, I can set in the house and look at the wife or be out in the shop working on BS racer stuff. Where would you be?

You can get e tach from www.tinytach.com (http://www.tinytach.com). I have one on my Radio Flyer and it works great. I also got the one with the hour meter. About $40.

Thank you monkey-1. $36.95 + shipping is not bad and I could use it on other small engines that I work on if I had to. I book marked the page so I would have it. Thank you again.:thumb:

I will have to agree with Woodchuck. This past weekend I was out riding my BSR and I was flying down the street and my neighbor waved to me, all I did was lift my fingers to kind of wave back and a bump in the road pulled me over to the left lane without any notice. Luckily I went with the flow and got my BSR back in control before anything happened.
