It's probably to late to ask but do I want a engine with a straight or tapered shaft?

Ok, you think I would know the answer to that question. I have never heard of a tapered shaft. Can you explain to us what the difference is?

The crank shaft is tapered, check picture.

Hello, You want to get a striaght side shaft 3/4 inch. The clutches will not work on a tapered shaft.:smash:

I have never seen a tapered shaft before on an engine like that. I am sure it has is applications, but no good for the BSR.
Does anyone know what kind of application that would need a tapered shaft? I would assume some type of pulley?

Hello, Mike you are correct! They are used a lot in the farming Industery for pulleys on like Hay elevators, feed augers etc.. Most have switched to the striaght shafts but some of the old equipment still use the tapered shafts. This tapered shaft motor also is used in different types of older commercial usages. It would not be good to try and use one on a bsr like you said!:smash:

Thanks for your reply, I guess that I should have done some more research before I bought the motor on E-bay

motofast1 is correct. Tapered shaft motors are industrial in application. Alot of the direct drive generators use tapered shaft motors.

Hello, Hey what did you have to give for it all together? I have several places to get them pretty cheap! Under 150.00 for 6.5 electric Start 3/4 shaft!:cool_dude:

$170.00 delivered to my door. Here in Idaho there are no Kart shops. The nearest Kart shop is 100 miles. This is my first BSR and I am a little impatient. I ordered a Barstool last night from Harbor Freight & my wife ordered one from Overstock.com, so she says that I will have to build a second BSR.

Hello, Thats not to bad! I paid 117.00 for my last one, plus shipping of 34.00. There is not a cart shop around here either. I have to order all my parts and because so, I try to find the best deal possiable. Anything under 200.00 to your door is pretty good! Watch on Ebay and you can sometimes catch one real cheap!
P.S. You can build a His and Hers BSR. Maybe she was hinting around that she wanted one. You better keep her happy! LOL

Ribucon,
That's right. My first job when I was 15 years old was at a small engine shop. I forgot about all the tapered shaft applications there.

j meadows, how long is the shft cause if its long enough normaly i think they hook up the pulley or what ever and it has a cap on the end of it . you might be able to do the same thing with a clutch. hope this helps

As noted in post #8, I upgraded to a straight shaft motor for an extra $30.

Looks like I have a 8hp HM80 Tecumseh with a 2 v-pulley on a 1" shaft from an older Homelite snowblower. There is no threaded end, or a threaded hole that I can see, but there is a keyway.
mini-me, are you sayin there's a possibility that the threaded hole in the end of the crank that I'd need to use a 1" clutch without setscrews is just covered? man, that'd be good news. As it stands, I see nothing holding this pulley on, and have considered running dual belts to a jackshaft that holds the clutch.

Hello, people wake up! Most of us stool builders know better, not to use a tapered shaft anyways. Voodoo barstool racers
