I would suggest for the beginner is to use some 1" X 1" 1/8" square tubbing. It is easy to cut and weld and you do not need a tubing bender.

That's my .02 cents.

I have to agree. I have built several projects out of this same size of tubing. Its super stong, easy to work with, and cheap to buy. Just be sure to either angle cutthe corners, or cap the open ends for a nice finished look.

it all depends do you want strenght or look 1"x1"x1/8" squair tube is strong looks ok when all finished but 1 1/4 .095-.065DOM tube harder to fit joints but well worth the effort it will leave a pro look but when it bends it gone.

Guys if you have the resources check around for better pricing. These steel companys are giving the consumer a serious boning. We saved over a grand by getting a quote from another supplier. I know your not buying bulk, but it shouldnt be robbery either.

i got a "better price" story

I have been accumulating some of my BSR parts and I was going to layout and weld the frame this 3 day weekend.
I get my metal from some local hole-in-the-wall, dirt yard-floor, plywood shack with three walls only 'office',
... and they have cheap prices if you don't need them to cut anything. I don't.
So i drive over there on Saturday morning, .. and they're closed for the three day weekend. :?
So, just for grins sake, i drive over to a HomeDepot because now i am a little disappointed that I waited to the last moment and i was ready to waste a few hours in my garage with horsin' around, my chop-saw and then stick a little metal tegether, maybe even drink a beer...

HomeDepot pricing: 4' of 1"x1" tube: $12.50 !!!!!!!!!

I don't think so. !?!

I sadly walk back out to my truck and just mowed the lawn instead.
No BSR fabbing for this procrastinator this weekend.
:X:X:X I have to wait until they re-open on Tuesday i guess

Having a Hossfeld bender in the shop, I decided to use 1 1/4x.065 ERW tubing for the main hoop and crossmember in the front. For the rear, I used a piece of 1 1/4 x .095 4130 I had in the drop barrel. Since the rear axle and bearing hanger are there it would stiffen up the rear a bit. The front axle will be 1 1/8 x .083 4130. This is material I had laying around so why not put it to use. I have four more stools to build for customers and will be using 4130 1 1/8 x .083 for these. All TIG welded. While bending tubing today, I had some wild ideas for a BSR so I sketched them out and will draw them up. One will have an articulating front end, and the other will be sort of "Art Deco" with wheel pants and all.

Why did I ever come to this site......it's addicting!

These BSR's will be on the "high end". These are for customers that have very large boats and want something different(other than a golf cart) to putt around the docks socializing. I have no idea yet as to cost, they don't care. They just want them.
