If I had to guess, I`d say it`s a gear reduction box. Maybe like a 6 to 1 for some kind of pump or mixer??? Heff

So the questions are,

Can i remove it?

And what size is the shaft?

What size front sprocket should i get for it? My rear sproket is a 54 tooth #41 chain size.

more to ? to come.

i agree that it's probably a reducer, and I don't know why you couldn't remove it. It looks like there is an iolfill plug on it (the reducer part) so I would be sure and drain it to avoid a bid mess. I have a 3.5 horse like it with a 3/4 inch shaft. i would guess thats whatyou have, but no way to know till you tear that reducer off.
sorry, can't help you on the sprocket part.
Just rip into that baby, thats how ya learn.
Good luck,

Well i ripped into it, got down to the main shaft and it is splined like a gear with no key way. I called a local small engine repair shop. and he said the thing on the side is a reducer, so it would make a go kart go really slow. and it would be hard to hook a clutch to the splined shaft. unless maybe i welded it.
So it is back on craigslist.

here is a picture.
