View Full Version : Dimension Ideas
Butts

I've been cruising this forum for a few weeks now and although I have learned alot, I need some advice. I have a Honda 919cc engine out of a Fireblade and need a place to put it. I have some innovative ideas to apply to my project, but I need a baseline track and wheelbase dimension to work from. What are your dimensions? I am a machinist and a licensed welder, so I have the resources to see this project through. This project won't be done overnight, but I promise to post all build pics. My overall goal is to have a low center of gravity including a wide track and a good set of wheelie bars!!!
Thanks in advance,
J.

best thing i can recomend, is to spend the $$ on a set of barstool plans from mike who hosts this site, all of his plans are detailed enough to get an idea of what you can stretch and modify to make it work for your motor, but if i had to guess, i would say the frame is about 36 inches from nose to tail and about 18-24 inches wide

Your my new hero!! That's awesome, I've always wanted to drop a sportbike motor in a go cart frame. A friend of mine just picked up an FJR1300 cc Yamaha motor, trans, computer and I am trying to convince him to drop it in a go-kart frame.
I would go with larger then life tires in the rear. Get the motor,seat, and driver down low, beneath the axle of the rear wheels. Keep the CG (Center of Gravity) down under the axle to help keep the wheelie factor under control. Go with tires roughly the same size as a standard Sportbike so you don't have to change the gearing too radically to maintain the same performance. Go with standard go-kart sized tires in the front, give it a slightly cartoonish look kinda like a Whacky Racers Ride (http://www.dan-dare.org/Dan%20FRD/WackyRacesCarsAndDrivers.htm). I'm thinking you are a perfect candidate for a Number 9 Special!!

Butts, I wouldn't do a BSR with either a barstool (30") or counterstool (24") with such a large engine because of the high center of gravity and high likelyhood of dumping it pronto. I think it'd be much safer instead to go with a beerbox racer design with a wide stance like 30/32" and 36/38" wheelbase. or maybe a barstool seat with chopped legs, anything to lower driver height. here's some ideas;
