So has anyone found any good alternatives for the Comet TAV2 that is no longer available?
Is there any reason why we can't run a clutch like this (http://www.gokartsupply.com/clutches.htm) with a chain to the axle?
I hope this site wakes up sometime soon. Is it dead because it's winter or what?
55 & sunshine up here by the Canadian border today. The motorcycles, golf carts & other toys are coming out of the woodwork today!

That clutch is what most BSR Builders use ,but there are better but more expensive ones e.g Max torque brand "tt", Max lube ,Hilliard extreme duty,Hilliard inferno fury,Hilliard inferno blaze,Brister's performance clutch ,all you can find at mfgsupply.com

I guess I'm confused then. Why are people using the TAV2 on a BSR?

Hey Tech9,
Will your BSR pull a wheelie?
I get the impression from some of the other builders that a torque converter set up is the way to go.
You can buy a real good clutch for the same money.

Good to hear Mike. Can you tell me specifically what clutch & where to buy?
The BSR I'm thinking of building will probably have a Harbor Freight 6.5 hp or equivelant motor in it. I'd rather it have good torque than high speed (wheelies are a must, but 25 - 30 mph is plenty).

It depends what engine you are using and the size of the PTO shaft.
We race 5hp flathead Briggs and Stattons and we run a Bully 6 spring clutch.
We rebuild the clutch every season, as it is relatively high maintenance.
You can find all kinds of used clutches on Ebay.
Horstman clutches are low maintenance and will handle all kinds of horsepower, up to 18hp (5hp briggs modified).

Mike you did not give me a chance to answer that second question (Why are people using the TAV2 on a BSR?) but yes Tav2 is certainly the way to go but is who can afford it.It also depends on how you design your chassis.Mine has a longer wheelbase than most others and was designed for cruzin or high speed runs, not for wheelies. If you want to wheelie then build a standard wheel base BSR, remove the governor ,change the valve springs and you will be doing wheelies even with that cheap max torque clutch.

Pulling wheelies with no TAV2,just needed to shorten the rear of the chassis and put wheelie bars.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aARhsiCR_eA

Thanks Tech9,
I have seen that video before, but didn't take too much notice of the clutch set up.
I have a spare Briggs flathead modified engine (18hp) I'm going throw on it.
That should do it!

That should do it! Just make sure you put wheelie bars, cause brain tissue and asphalt don't look good together

Ha Ha Ha, I'm accident prone as hell too.
Just remember the coefficient of friction for skin on asphalt is the same as warm butter on a cheese grater, owww!

Can you use a clutch like this one:

This one is a 12T, would that work?

you can use that clutch but make sure you get the right size drive gear to go with it.

Might have to do a little trial and error to get the right setting.
