For the most part you use any size horizontal shaft engine. I Have a 6.5 honda clone which seems to be a popular size for these things. Good luck.

Most people want to try putting the biggest engine they can find into a BSR.
The problem is the amount of space available under the barstool itself is very limited.
If your grandfather has a shop full of old engines, you may want to go with a 5hp horizontal shaft Briggs and Stratton engine. Look for one with a 5/8" pto shaft, so you can use a centrifical clutch on it.
As Capnron mentions most guys use the 6.5 clone motor (a copy of a Honda 6.5hp engine) from Harbor Freight to power their rides. They had a sale on them last week for $89.

The possibilities are ENDLESS!!!!! I put a dirtbike motor on mine, and I think that was a great idea, not only does it look cool but TONS of power and speed. Not to mention if you dig around you can find one for about what you will pay for a 5hp briggs. I bought mine connected to the whole dirt bike for $175 then parted out the dirtbike and profited on the deal. If you go with a small horizontal shafted motor, make sure it has a straight crank not a conical. If not you will never get it to hold any sort of clutch. Good luck, and enjoy you will love it. They are one of a kind head turning unique toys.
