hello
ive built a barstool racer and have had it done for about a month now. instead of buying a TAV to begin with i opted to use a clutch. well i have burnt up 1 clutch and am not too far from burning up the second one. i was wondering if anyone knew how much the TAV pulley expands. because i have a tight fitting area for it. also how wide is the TAV to begin with. o yea i plan on getting the Tork-a-verter 2, 3/4 bore, #41 chain (if that makes a difference on size or not)
thanks for all and any help

Hey Cody,
Got your email and then noticed you posted here also.
As for the opening of the TAV, I think it opened about 1 -1 1/2 inches. You can also mount the TAV in a downward position giving you more room with the barstool legs. I did this in my first build.
As for the tork-a-verter dimensions, you will have an extra 2 1/2" need on the drive side for the mounting of the tork-a-verter when the rear pulley is in the closed position. So add about 1 1/2 more inches of width to clear the bar stool legs.

just to make sure im understanding this all right, thats a total of no less than 4" on the drive side for the TAV to work properly

I don't know if I would say that... If you already have a clutch on your engine that is about 2 inches correct? Because you have a chain that also need to run back.
Now maybe 2 more inches to allow for the pulley to open. It also depends on where your stool is positioned. You may not even have to worry if the leg is not going to be near the pulley.
You can also mount the tork-a-verter at a downward angle to get more clearence from the legs.

i suggest using a #35 chain in case you want to switch over to a kart racing clutch as they dont have them in 41 chain. i got finals tomorrow:dizzy:

Sniffles has a good point. But I think I would go that way first. Same money and their smaller. I have never run a race clutch but my guess is that if they are good enough for a race engine and kart, it should do for a BSR.

what brand/size/model torq conv do you have?
I'm with Cody, clutches suck!, I had a basic cheepie, rattled, squeeked vibrated, and burnt out,Quick!
bought a new 12 tooth drum for the race Noram clutch I had, light and heavy shoes, multiple springs, Have tried numerous combo's, Still sucks!, either slips to much or locks up too quick and shutters, still rattles and carries on.
I'm ready to try a converter.
Mike, what gears are you running?, I want it to pull hard to do wheelies, and stuff, not too worried about big speed, 20-25 will be plenty,(for now) lolol
I've seen your video clips, looks like yours pulls pretty good on bottom end, do you like it?
Thanks for the input

1100KAW,
I use a TAV2 for a #41 chain. In the photos I was using a #54 Tooth sprocket at that time. If you want the torque and wheelie power we have the 54T sprocket in stock at barstool racer supply.
Click on the link below to check out the sprocket...

You will be very happy with a TAV2, never had a problem with mine and I beat the hell out of it...

Thanks for the input, I'm going to order one up, thats what I thought you had, by looking at the pics
Our favorite place to shop, Ebay, place called small engine deals seems to have the best deal, 177.95 including shipping.
whats the front sprocket?
I'm running 35 chain, 12 tooth+75, I like the ratio, pulls real hard, but obvious top end sacrifice, on paper it should run about 22mph @3600rpm.
I would assume that if I stick with 35 chain, and order the TAV with 12 tooth, I should get the same feel but all the smoothness of the belt + the poss 10% overdrive they brag about on the Comet site.Eh???
Sounds good !!!

1100KAW,
Go to BMKIKARTS.com for the TAV2. If I remember right, he has them for $145.00 on his site. You can get either the #35 or #41 chain front sprocket.
I believe I have a 10 or 11 tooth front with a 40T rear. I run about 40 mph with my TAV and I love it!

i did get a TAV2. didnt look like it was going to fit at first but it did. it is 100 times better than centrifugal clutches. it engages/disengages so smoothly. if u were like me before with clutches this TAV will have u feeling the same way as me

I got my TAV2, friday, spent most of weekend tinkering with the install.
Basiscally had to change everything to make it fit, had to relocate Engine, cut the engine mount plate off, and re-weld. Had to modify the TAV a little, trimmed a little off the plate to fit where I wanted it.
But, It is awesome!!!. Jerks the front wheels no problem, pulls real smooth, and Queit!, no jingle, no rattle.
I wish I had went with a converter at the begining.
For anyone out there building a BSRor other motorized toy, Dont waste your time with a clutch, Converter is the way to go!
YEEE HAAAWW, can you tell I'm happy.

hi. how many of yall are using clutches and do you like them cause i paid 60$ for mine and it works great and i havent had any problems with like rattling or anything. those of you that are using clutches how much did you pay for them and how do you like them. mines a max torque and i had to run a clutch cause i wouldnt have enough room between the stool leg and the engine.

aw, dang.... I cut some off the end of my crank so the clutch would fit nice and close to the motor. now I bought a Tav2 and the crank's too dang short for the sheaves now. Guess I'll see if the machine shop can put some back on, lol
