I think most guys run a 12 tooth driver and a 72 tooth sprocket and a good quality racing clutch.
If you want to do wheelies you need to install a Tav30 torq-a-verter. They provide a whole lot more torque and power to the ground from your 6.5 hp.

I was just going to ask this question. I will be using a 6.5 clone and a torque converter.
So you suggest starting with a 12/72?

No, that ratio is only good for a centrifugal clutch set up.
Chris Insull, Chris Shultz or one of the others maybe able to answer that question on the torque converter gearing better than me.
However I can remember someone mentioning a 12/45 setup once, but I can't be sure. I'm sorry I can't answer your question.

12/45 will be fine for wheelies and speed. The CVT will work wonders for you.

Chris, looks like the 45 tooth gear is hard to find.
I am going to order everything I need to build this week. Cant wait to get started.

What do you suggest on engines?
I plan on going with the 6.5 clone. There are just so many options. Found one on e-bay that has it all done to it, just needs a fuel tank and its $247.00. Its the yellow one. If I buy the Harbour Freight one for $99.00 (blue one) and buy all the stuff I think it would be about the same price.
I would like to talk to someone that has done these, PM me and I will give my cell phone number.

Are you looking for #35 or #40 chain. Personaly I would run the 40 and never look back. Thats what my advice was for.......
The yellow motors are the better way to go. Your correct in by the time all the parts and labor are in you will have the same motor. Contact KiwiMike. He knows much more about these than I do.

A 12/45 3.75:1 set up is the same ratio, give or take as a 14/52 3.86:1.
These gears will be real easy to get.

I found a gear ratio chart that maybe pretty handy for you guys.

12/72 or 6.00:1 ratio for a centrifugal clutch setup

12/45 or 3.75:1 ratio for a TAV torque converter setup.

If I only had the time to find out for my self.
I have the 12/48 setup with an 11 Hp Honda and centrifugal clutch. 58 inch wheelbase and 480 lbs with rider. Can I pop some wheelies or am I confined to mother earth?

You should be able to pop a great wheelie with that set up. The 11hp engine may over come the difference in gearing. If not, you'll know what the problem is.

KiwiMike,
I have checked around but still do not understand how the ratios work out. I have the TAV but want to slow this thing way down. It will pull wheelie without even a blink of an eye and do around 30mph. This is just way to fast. I built this for my wife to ride and she is scared to death of this thing. I am using a 6.5 Harbor Freight blue motor. Any recommendations on a ratio would be greatly appreciated.

Smief#1, I am not sure what ratio you are running presently. The ratio can be calculated by counting the teeth on the driver (the sprocket on the TAV unit) and the rear gear teeth (the sprocket on the axle) eg. 12t Driver, 52t Axle.
Now divide the axle teeth by the driven teeth and that will give you your ratio,
eg. 52/12= 4.333:1 ratio.
If your ratio is causing too much ground speed you can run a smaller drive gear and a bigger axle gear to slow the BSR down. eg. 10t Driver and a 72t Axle gear will calculate to 72/10= 7.200:1 ratio, almost half the ground speed.
The other thing you can try is fitting a restrictor plate between the carburetor and the cylinder head, which will cut back the power and response of the engine. These can be bought from most kart shops and they come in different colors depending on the size of the intake hole in them.
I'm not sure whether you are using a twist or thumb throttle, as some thumb throttles come with a limiting screw on them that you can adjust to slow down maximum revs.

Lemondspud1,
I just finished two barstool racers with a pair of HF 6.5 and 2 TAV units, I used a 10t drive sprocket and a 45 tooth rear sprocket with #41 chain (tried #40 but was a little wide) I cant remember where i found the sprockets but they are steel and made right to the hub its all one unit and real heavy duty, and they were cheap, I will go through my reciepts and see if i can come up with where i bought these from, I had to look a long time to find the 45's, but my barstools have plenty of torque to pop wheelies and are more than fast enough its a really good combination...

Thanks Mike for the info,
I am going to give the 10t 72t a try and see how it works. Sorry for not responding sooner, working on mine now:thumb:
Thanks again

You could try one of these, to slow down the engine revs and throttle response.
They are easy to fit, but you need an extra intake gasket.
