My comment is by no means a criticizm...just my personal experience with both...I started with a wheel..a nice kart one...looked real cool...so cool that I bid and won a Momo kart wheel and used a anodized billet quick disconnect hub...more cool...that way you can remove and carry it around....but when I started to ride @ speed I realized the hand position did not give much leverage...I had foot throttle and brakes....the foot throttle was awkward to control during a wheelie...I was at the point of building a billet mount under the wheel for tee bar paddles for gas and brake,,but...gave up
So....I bought a alloy mountain bike bar with a alloy stem...the kind that clamps to the steering shaft ( with a bushing to match sizes )..I am now looking for a e-bay carbon fiber one with a tig welded stem that has more rise....no purpose except looks...
On a final note..you can make a tee bar from scratch...and a thumb throttle from a wrecked atv is great....

you dont wanna steering wheel. trust me....i saw a guy at a go kart track with a barstool racer with a steering wheel....hahahaha...thats all i have to say....he started doing a wheelie and the steering wheel popped off cuz he didnt bolt it down right.....he was ok but barstool got trashed.....also its awkward to ride a wheelie when pressing down on a gas pedal. well thats wut i heard....stick with handlebars.

My first barstool had a 5/8" hollow tube for the steer shaft and when I took it for a test ride. A screw got stuck in the carb and I was running full throttle and finaly had to crash it into the bush and when that happen my steering bent in half...It was a sight to see i tell ya Everyone watching got a good chuckle

i put a 10 inch steering wheel on mine and made hand controls for it. you'r not going to turn alot. these things don't turn on a dime. but i have had no problems with mine. And yes you have got to bolt it down right. And put a kill switch on it.

We also have the T-Bar Steering Kits for sale on Barstool Racer Supply. Here is a link for the kit:

They are very easy to assemble, a couple of welding magnets will center the steering shaft to the handle bar and then weld.

The mountain bike bar is the way I'm going. Got an ATB threadless stem with a 1 1/6" I.D. The 5/8" locking collars I'm using have an O.D. of 1 1/16", so it's a perfect match, if I stack 3 collars, it's the same height as the stem clamp for full coverage.

I use a mountain bike setup also....I just swapped for a BMX bar clamp and a bar with a little rise...makes a better riding position....I use a bronze bushing to get the OD-ID to match and tighten it good.....

On a BSR I prefer the handle bars. It gives you better leverage and seems to work better in my opinion. I would ride wheelies and on two side wheels all the time it gave me the control I felt was needed. BUT, on my Radio Flyer, I felt a steering wheel was a must. I wanted it to look like an old T bucket hot rod with the stance an the no fender look, and the fat rear tires. I had to have a steering wheel on it because of the hot rod look. I dont think the Radio Flyer would have looked right with handle bars.

I went with titanium "fat bars" that were designed for the kx motorcross bikes. The low rise and big tubing make it perfect for a bigger person like me (6'5"). This is exactly what I have on my kx 250 and I love it. I had to fab up a set of bar mounts as the trees for these things are pretty spendy. I never tried a wheel, but I just did the math and realized that a wheel is not something I wanted to try and control the beast with running 65 around an asphalt track LOL. Lots of guys here at the track run a wheel and its amusing because its not a matter of if they wreck but when. You would think after the first one they would learn HA HA HA.

I was afraid of this and bought a kill switch. I mounted it next to the throttle....
