I ran across this on ebay tonite. Cool thing is it appears as the creator is about an hour away from me. I might have to order these plans. Very cool. Looks like it is powered by a clone and a tav.

Looks like a redneck segway. I might order these plans. I am curious as to what was used for tracks and how much that would cost. I have lots of lawn mower front tires for the rest of it.

Mount a barstool on it and see if you can stay on for 8 seconds.

Mike, did you see that somewhere or did you end up buying the plans?

I ended up buying a set of plans. I was intrigued by the set up, not that I will ever get around to building one, too many unfinished projects.
The plans look good and you should be able to build it fairly easily, but there is a little machining involved here and there.
The drivetrain is by way of a TAV torqaverter and a Peerless differential and by the looks of it, will be the two most expensive parts.
I'm going to look into whether a rearend and transmission out of a small riding mower (say a Snapper) could be converted to do the same thing.
It would be well worth the money buying the plans if you are serious about building one.

Amen on too many unfinished projects. I will probably end up buying the combo pack because I am curious as well. Mike Bean kinda spoiled me with his $10 plans. They were so nice that I expect all plans to cost $10 now. I don't see why a riding mower transaxle wouldn't work. Get one that uses 3/4" or 1" keyed axles and buy wheels accordingly.

Thanks again Mike,

Hey KIWI,

Any chance you could send me those plans or are they protected?

Thanks,

Jesse, I'm sorry mate, I can't send you a copy because of the copyrights on the plans. They are well worth buying though.

It is pretty clever. I bought both plans. His personal track vehicle uses big rig tires.

Ivan,
Post some photos of the build when you start. I'm sure you will adapt the design to suit your needs.

It's a real simple design, but I think the guide rollers that keep the tracks from coming off may need a redesign, as they don't look too stout.

Mike, Hahahahhahaa, "when i start" ? :), i waiting for YOU to start :) hahaha. 24 hours isnt enough for me now. But i will, i just need a while to consolidate the parts for my BSR first, design it up, and build that. I think ill get a lot more use from the BSR than the Magic Carpet, for now. But you know ill keep in touch on it.

The side rollers i was thinking exactly the same as what your talking about. That looks certainly like a "failure" point at some stage. I think perhaps a bushed alum sleeve that is still able to rotate and not chew the sidewalls out.

Ha ha ha Ivan, You caught me with some subliminal messaging. Yeah, I need to get started on one of those "Redneck Segways".

I have some great ideas to make these things a very saleable item as my redneck mates over here had a brainstorming session on it over a 30 pack of beer.

I need to buy some more steel and figure out how I'm going to use the Riding Mower transaxle to get the power to the ground.

Peerless differentials are available from The Surplus Center, In Lincoln, Nebraska. They have several different models.

Just looks like another way to kill myself. Hope my wife doesn't see the plans.

Frank,
Here's the idea, I wanted to run a transmission with a low gear and reverse, so a slightly modified Riding Mower transmission seemed to be an option.

You had better hide those plans, if your wife is like mine she can probably smell mischief from a mile away. Lol.

Maybe a peerlees transmission like racing lawnmowers use. Is it 500/700 series?

dwright, I see that you are going to use two brake set ups. You can use only one if you bolt the brake rotor to the differential soup can and that way it will stop both axles. That's what I have done, and it works great. Just a suggestion.

It looks great Dwight, just like on the plans. Have you thought about mods for the tracks, the plastic roller/bolt set up on the plans looks a bit weak and jerry rigged. How about solid rubber wheels so you don't peel off the tires.
We had a pneumatic tire set up on one of our tracked vehicles at work, and they were nothing but bloody trouble. We ended up foaming them.

What I meant was, If she sees the plans, she will want me to build one. As long as my life insurance is still in effect. After my barstool accident, my first comment was that I am selling the bar stool before it kills me. She said "oh, No. You have to ride it again" I think she is trying to kill me. LOL!

I think I'm more of a pain in the backside to my wife when I'm all busted up than you are Frank and maybe worth less (worthless) in the insurance department. The broken leg was the last straw with 4 months in a wheel chair and the broken back a few years before that. Lol.

I am finished except for the tracks. I have made all the rollers but cannot find the pair of 265.75-16 donor tires, still looking.

That seems to be the magic number for any project involving a motor. I'm building a mini bike now, then probably an electric barstool racer, but sometime in the distant future I can see myself building one of these. Very cool.

Kiwi: You may be right about the air in the tires . I am thinking of foaming the drive tires because they get low on air just sitting i the shop(new but chinese tires) and first time you ride it with too little air it spins in the tire and guts the tube.
Do you have any foaming tires opinions, What type and brand names?
Doug

Frank McGrath

Any large tire shop can foam fill your tires. But I would be concerned about the weight of the filled tire. I got some golf cart tires filled and the batteries on the cart ran down faster because of the load. It was an industrial cart and ran on warehouse floors, mostly.

KiwiMike

Here is a tire foam site I found that may be of some use, relatively cheap:
