One tip that should be obvious: Make sure you have all of your big items handy during mockup. I started mocking up a project with a 'stand in' motor, only to find out when my real motor came in that it was larger. I had to modify my frame and just lost some time, but it could have meant starting over. Another thing is be sure to tack weld everything together and check for clearance and such before welding it solid. Its much easier to break a tack weld than to cut off a huge weld and reposition something.

As for mocking up, I would also suggest the use of welding magnets. You can purchase these at Habor Freight for very litttle money and they sure save a lot of time.
I have some photos in the forms showing how I used them to help position the front spindle mount prior to welding. My first time around I did not think of using them and it was a lot more diffucult.

Those dern little magnets Mike LOL,
it seems like everytime I do a little grinding or run the chop saw they get completely full of little metal cuttings. That a real pain as you never get em all off and the stupid things arent square LOL. Handy little bastards when your by yourself though

Hey Voodoo_step,
I have an idea...do not grind next to the magnets..
I found that taking a rag and wiping the magnet off in once direct helps a lot and then I use my air compressor to blow of the let overs...
Also, try not to drop them on the floor, they pick up all the little nasties from your grinding and filing...
Have Fun!

Boy dont I know that,
I hate it when you are fixing to tack something and you bump the magnet or something and BLAM it hits the floor. Nothing more frustrating than trying to get all the dingle berrys off the magnet LOL

May I sugest that you put the magnets in a plastic bag if there is going to be drilling/grinding near by. As you pull the magnet out of the bag turn the bag inside out. Saves a lot of clean-up. HTH...........Terry

Nah takes too much time,
air hose is just as quick and the ziploc bags get holes in them from welding cutting and grinding
