I cant decide what engines to use to build my BSR. I have a older 5 Hp B&S engine, but tank is rusted and carb will have to be rebuilt, or is it possible to put a Mikuni carb on it and a remote fuel tank.? Is there such a kit and what size of carb? And will there be any performance change? Engine is currently on a heavy old go kart my dad built me years ago. Or whether I should spend the money, and get an up to date engine like a 6.5 hp. But I also think it would be cool to have electric start. and be able to mount a big old tach on the bars. These engines seem to be quite pricey. O and I would also like it to go.I am asking for anyones opinion. thanks for the help.

You can run a tillotson carb on it but I know there pricy.Im not positive they will work for stock motors though. I know they do when you punch out the motors. Glenn

Are there any Briggs and Stratton performance parts links, that I could look for stuff to hop up my Briggs? I know air filters, any thing else other than boring and etc?

Wanz,

What kind of Briggs do you have? I am sure there is a cam and some other stuff. But we need to know what model you have..

Cant tell you exact model. Its on my younger days gocart, out at my fokes know more by this weekend. I know its 5HP, said quite power or something like that on recoil, and it has the carb mount on the top of the gas tank. I just remember it was a pain to clean the carb and tank. I think dad bought it back in the early 90's. I will have to dig it out and do some checking.

Hey Kenny Drako are those motors any good???? it looks like you would have to remove the throttle control and make your own return spring system so it would work on a BSR. Have you used these motors before?

Hey woodchuck,
I've used 4 of them. no problemo out of any. If it is to hard for U to make up a minor thing as a throttle return set up maybe U are in the wrong line of work.

Easy Drako I make more custom parts then you could shake a stick at. I was just wondering about the quality of the motor. I already have a custom part that fits these motors for a return sping set up.

Hey guys checked on my 5 hp, it is a Model 132232 ? I took carb off looks OK, but gas tank I haven't ever seen anything so rusted. Removed valve cover every thing looks clean as a whistle. shined flashlight i spark plug hole looks good too. Gas tank should be that much. also considering putting cam kit in, and I also see there are bigger coils too. Do you guys think it is necassary to do the rod and piston as well? Is it worth it, in replacement parts? I think it maybe fun to soup it up.Will I get any Hp difference? Open for any suggestions..:thumb:

Hey wanz,
the 132232 was a quiet power engine originally built specially for montgomery wards power equipment. They are a bushing type engine and a very light casting. This was one of the least expensive flatty that briggs made. Dont waste your time hopping it up as it wont stay together very long. The aluminum bore on the cylinders werent straight and the cranks were not bored parralel to the cylinders. Also the heads were cast very light and have a tendency to crack a rooney. Go to a lawn mower shop and see if you can swipe a gas tank from another engine and just put a kit in the carb. I think a carb kit last time I bought one was 4.99. Also if your wondering, a new tank retails for 59.00 directly from briggs.

They do make aftermarket carbs for the 5hp flatty but a mikuni is way way to big. The smallest mikuni available for a briggs is 28 mm and thats no good. You can put a tilly on it but your looking at about $30.00 for the intake, $89.00 for the carb (model 314G), $20.00 for the filter cup, $8.00 for gaskets,$15.00 for a filter, $10.00 for filter oil and $10.00 for a linkage kit. Thats $182.00 which will purchase you a new engine not to mention your engine probably wont like the tilly simply because it has wear. If ya wanna run the flatty find a used tank, put a 5 dollar kit in the carb and go run it the way it is. If you wanna hop one up, find you a good dual bearing raptor 3 block or steel sleeve I/C block and go from there. To do one right prepare to spend about $2500.00 to have it machined and put together correctly

Can you post a pic of the throttle return setup you made for that motor? I just got one cheap and want to put it on a barstool.
Thanks

There is already a return spring. You have to loosen the nut on the pivot point to eliminate the friction, it will then return to idle.

Thanks, I was hoping it was that easy. I havnt had time to start any work on it, but know that makes me even more excited to get this barstool going. I also noticed that you have a custom exhaust, did you build it or buy, what kind of performance increase did you see with the new exhaust. ny other recommendations you can give on your experiance? Hows the power that this motor puts out?
Thanks
Paul

The exhaust was part built, part bought. I did not notice a lot of difference in power, it is mostly a visual thing and I wanted a little sound out of it. I have been happy with the motor, it starts easy and runs well! There is a picture here http://barflyracers.com/showthread.php?p=4389#post4389 of the exhaust:cheers:
