View Full Version : help me clean up a mess!

I'm asking for advice on a mess I got myself into. I built the stool fine, pretty happy so far, it has not gone to paint yet. I bought a TAV to fit the 1" crank on my 8hp Tecumseh to get a little more bottom end, get the front wheels up easier...
Here's the rub:
When I first installed the Comet clutch on the 1" shaft, it never was tapped on the end. since I was paying to have the crank tapped, I had them cut quite a bit off the crank. Got the clutch right where I want it, nice and close to the motor.
Well, the TAV needs a bit more of crank that what I lopped off.
Here are what I see as options, and would like to hear your advice.

Guy,
On the TAV2's for the 6.5HP motors (3/4" shaft) they come with a crank shaft sleeve that slips over the crank and if I remember correctly extends it a bit. Being that you have a 1" crank they may not do that. I have an idea..
It is that big of a deal to just have the end of the crank drilled and tapped and then have a space made you can place on the end which you can put the bolt through? I guess at that point you might as well have them weld it to the crank...
I dunno...

GUY,
I agree with Mike The best would be to have a spacer made the thickness U need to extend the shaft. If the key fits in the keyway & U loc-tight the bolt U shoudn't have any problem.

Yeah go with that just dont weld onto your crank because iv been told in most cases they are hardend steel.

if you wanted to spend the money, you cold have another 1" shaft made, with a theaded stud out one end, and drilled and tapped on the oter, and thread it into the crank. Would be tough to line up a keyway though.

Crankshafts are ridiculously expensive. DO NOT BUY A NEW ONE! Thats about 80 dollars that could be going to a new motor. You could sell the parts from your engine on ebay and have the money go to a new motor. JMO.

I think sniffles is right. may be the easy way out to sell what you have and but new. I bought a tec 6.5 w/a tav2, only took 5-10 minutes to install the tav. lol however, I am going through a "stool relocation program". My stool legs will be side by side instead of across each other, and shortened.

Well, my machinist friend says he can use a bit more 1" stock, drill a countersunk hole to use an allen bolt to attach the nub to the crank, then tap the bigger countersunk part to accept another bolt. Then finish up by welding the chamfers. Sounds good to me. The bolt does most of the holding, and weld is just extra. heck, the bolt held the clutch on just fine without much ft-lbs. I suppose afterwards we could turn the whole mess down and sleeve it, but I don't want to disassemble the motor, if I did, I'd get another crank and a better rod and springs. The small engine place where I was hoping to get a bit off the end of a dead crank told me horror stories though, against fed law to even straighten a bent crank, it'll fly apart and put out someone's eye, the liabilities, etc.. but I think my machinist's plan will work, given the rpms we're working with...
Also consider that I'm about ready for paint, and don't want to relocate the stool or motor plate for a new engine. Maybe it's best to keep this one bulletproof and with the Centrifigal clutch and save the tav for the next one.. looks like the OHV engines have a bit more offset with the head to the rear

hey guy my two cents would be to take some one inch stock and machine a sort of tit on one end. Then you could machine a counter bore into the crank, run a bolt through the new piece and thread it into the crank. the tit and counter bore will insure that it all runs true.. i would cut the key way over the seam of the two pieces. this way would allow you to rotate the outer piece to get the two lined up....and once keyed it will be super strong. i have seen this done on 30 h.p. electric motors on equipment and seems to work well. hope this helps.

I have to second the motion from Hellbentrodder.. Sounds like a good fix. I would trust it on my grandmas wheel chair if she had one.

Thanks for the ideas.... What I ended up doing is buying a running Jacobsen snowblower at a yard sale for $50. same Tecumseh HM80 8hp engine. Mounted the TAV2 to that.
