I ran over a small piece of metal and put a hole in my tire and I need to remove it and patch it.

How do you guys break the bead on your tires and is there a quick and dirty way to break the bead from the rim for the do-it-yourselfer working at home?

Thanks,

Mike Bean

Nice work!

Do you have any supports in the bottom to hold the rim in place?

It looks like I have a new project with some left over steel. I need to get my tired fixed soon...

i have a home made tool like the pic...works good with effort ( not a criticizm )...wish I had a real kart tool....it has a ring ( 5-3/8" ID ) and presses on the bead all the way around....can't say it is better...just looks better and probably takes more force...any thoughts?

Rubicon,

I would think if you are trying to break the whole bead at once, you would need a lot more pressure. Good idea though...

If you notice in tire shops, they break the beads little at a time.

I guess I am going to start fabing up a bead breaker with some extra 1" square tubing I have here..

my next door neighbor owns Dixie Karting...they sell a bead tool that is common i guess to kart guys..it is a ring....figure it takes a lot of leverage like you said...i know the one i built like a tire changer takes a lit of readjusting and work a little at a time...so much one time that i got pissed and used a cutoff grinder and trashed the tire beads to get it off....maybe that is why so many kart guys sell theit tires and rima on e-bay to barstool racers so they don't have to hassle with unmounting them...go figure

Hey Mike,
My buddy Mark Probasco down in texas sells those bead breakers with an actual anvil fitted for 5 and 6 wheels for 18.00. No tax outside the state and cheap shipping.

the way i broke the bead on mine was i found a piece of 6.5 inch i.d. pipe laying around, it had a 1/2 inch wall. I deburred it real good and set it on top of the tire, then put a piece of flat stock on top of that. the whole mess went into my press and POP.....the bead was off.

Check out the mint tire installer in northern catalog. I bought one for $40 and you can install tires and break beads with it. It was the best $40 I have spent building this barstool.
