I'm getting ready to do a new build, mini parade car (43 high boy) I've got a peerless diff. but found out while grawling up frame that the axle is going to be a few inches short. I called peerless and the axles that I have are the only lenghts they have. The ends that are in the diff are splined and my buddy with the machine shop said that he can't cut the splines so making a couplete new ones are out of the question. Has anyone lengthend a 1 inch axle and had any good luck at it. Also was wandering about the brake mounting. I'm going to try and find a rotor to mount directly on the diff but if not I'm going to have to mount it on the axle. ? is, mount just one rotor on one side or rotors on both sides, OR mount rotors out at the tires with hyd. calipers (everything is going to be seen since there's not any fenders? Any ideas would be great.

Hey Sweav,
I am not expert on machining myself, but maybe if you called around to a few other shops they may be able to make a new axle for you.
They had to be made in some machine shop at one time, so someone has to be able to make another.
The only other idea I can think of, depending on how short the axle is coming up, can you use the extended rear wheel hubs to help out?

It wont help you any but a buddy of mine splines drive shafts for out outboard motors all the time. He mad me a 1" stainless shaft around 20" long with splines on both ends for $100. Just check with some other machine shops.

You have some ideas going in the right direction...I any care to look at my previous pics you will see what I describe. Buy a tubular kart axle I think the steel ones are all chromoly...mine was....now remove the Peerless axles and cut them leaving a 3" or so stub....then measure and cut your tubular kart axle where needed to provide correct left and right lengths ( your diff is offset)...then all that is needed is to turn the Peerless stubs to the exact I.D. of the tubular axle....do a plug weld....that is to drill 2ea 1/2" holes in the tubular axle ( offset them so they are not across from each other )...then do a good hot weld to fill the holes with the stubs inserted...if your machine work is press fit to begin with then the axles should be straight...then put each back in lathe and turn off the weld bead ( this will allow it to fit thru any bearing...
As for the brake...get or make a bracket or disk that will fit the case bolts of the diff housing opposite the sprocket....works great on mine...if you have time look back at my last wagon pics and see the billet aluminum dropped front axle with "speed holes" on it.....looks like a Superbell axle....great to see someone with a diff

Warpaint - Yah, the guy came through wit the money. It shipped out wed., HATED to see it go. I'll be building another one after I get this parade car done. After everything I learned building that one the next one will be twice as good. I just hope the guy who bought it doesn't go out and break his neck on it. Had him sign a waiver saying that I wasn't responsible for anything before I shipped it. Hey, you were supposed to get with me before you started your new one so I could help you drink beer while you worked on it!

Speaking of differentials I was at the lawn mower shop and found two Peerless type differentials in the junk pile. Got them for $10 each including the sprockets. Now my "Beer Truck" barstool is going to have tandem axles and all 4 wheels will drive. It will be cool!! Point is don't forget the lawnmower shop when you are looking for parts...........Terry

Any machine shop with an index or dividing head and a horizontal mill should be able to cut splines for you. I do it all the time for dana 60 and ford 9" rearends. If you cant find anyone to do it call me with the length you need, length of spline, spline count, diameter of the axle, and any kind of keeper grooves etc etc etc. I can hammer one out for you in about a half an hour.
