I just found barstool racing a week ago. Hilarious stuff.

I'm am going to fab a frame and put one together, probably using this forum for advice and pictures.

I've been looking at adds for engines the past couple days.

Would a Biggs Animal be a good engine for a BarStool?

By reading advice on this forum, it looks like my plan of attack is to first get engine and a stool, so i can measure them and create frame and engine plate second. (?)

thanks for any help,

i see Briggs has a 6.5 Intek that cheaper then the Animal
Anything in particular to look for in a BSR engine:
horizontal shaft? is 3/4" shaft the norm?
elec start or is that just not necessary?

any other engine particulars from the experienced?

The animal engine is alot of motor. I would go with the Intek 5.5 or 6.5. For the difference in money, I would go with the Intek and add electric start. I have a friend of mine that did that on a BSR and its really nice.

10-4 on the Animal being excessive. thanks for the heads up on that one.

So i'm checking out the Intek 6.5, and i'm happy to find  that there are 14 different briggs intek 6.5 models. Jese, the guys in R&D over there are active guys ehhh??

There are 10 models in the I/C line and some more in the Pro line.

The differences are pretty small: crankshaft width, or type (some are tapered), some have fuel pumps, and some have a little coil :D,

and some have a Reduction unit on the crankshaft which i'm not exactly sure what that is saying to me.

I'll bet i couldn't go wrong with any one of them since most of those options seem like they can be used or fabbed around, but still the same... any preferences?

If you are using a hanging gas tank should you use a fuel pump or does gravity pull the volume?

Whats that Intek Gear reduction crank all about? it seems to me that getting a 3/4" straight horizontal shaft (not tapered) should do the trick.

At this rate, i might just go out to my shed and take my darned lawnmower engine out and use it, except it doesn't work and i make my kid use the push mower so forget that.

thanks,

mike

Fatdog,

Just FYI, I bought a 6.5hp INTEK last winter to put on my barstool. It has plenty of power with a MAX-Torque clutch ( 12 - 72 gear #35 ), but the problem with the INTEK is the carb and related throttle hookup. It would almost die when the throttle was opened ( EPA stuff I guess ), and unfortunately the fix makes the motor run rich at idle.

This is just a suggestion, but what you might want do is go on www.4cycle.com and see if anyone has a PZ15 carb for sale. These came on the Animal motors, are a slide valve carb with replaceable jet if needed, and would work great for this kind of thing. We race karts and use this motor and carb. Only problem would be the gov has to be removed and a remote fuel tank and pulse pump used unless you hang a tank from the seat somehow. It is a bunch of work to do this, but unless you can figure out a way to get the stock carb to respond nicely, it might be the only choice.

I had the 6.5 on the barstool for a while, made a race motor for the karts out of it and bought a 4.5hp Robin Subaru motor for it. This motor responds to the throttle nicely, is quiet, but doesn't have the zip the 6.5 INTEK did. Which at my age isn't a bad thing. If you can get a torque converter to adapt to the Robin motor that would be nice. It already has the cable hookups for a twist grip throttle, and with this gear will run about 20mph.

Hope this is of help.

Dave.

There's some discussion of the 6.5 Intek as well as a link to the one I bought in this thread:

http://barflyracers.com/showthread.php?t=96

Some of what I said there regarding the need to take the gas tank off may not be true depending on how you mount things but the carb location and exhaust pipe will take some reworking to fit under a stool.

I haven't actually fired mine up yet to have any feedback regarding the throttle response. Someone else in that thread is using a 5.5 Intek without any mention of poor throttle response. I plan to run my with the governor until I get bored with it and rebuild it like an F200 motor (but without the 190cc crank).

Stoolpigon,

Can you take come close up photos of that 6.5 Intek engine showing the carb and exhust setup?

I am thinking a person could always make a quick custom exhaust pipe to go around the stool.

Thanks!

UPS says I should have my TAV2 this weekend so I'll start mocking stuff up and I'll take some pics to post here.

The exhaust has an easy workaround, it comes up out of the head and makes a 90 degree turn to the muffler. The top of the muffler hits the rung on the stool. If you cut the exhaust where it goes up out of the head and add ~4" you'll go over the rung of the stool.

I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do about the carb. The dimensions of the TAV2 will determine how far I need to offset the motor. If I can put it far enough to the crank side then the carb can stay with the stock filter, but if the TAV2 makes me move the motor over to the pull-start side I'll have to do something with the carb. Anyone using a clutch with an inboard sprocket won't have to worry about this, the Intek 6.5 is an excellent choice for that situation and will fit under a stool easily with only the small exhaust mod.
