View Full Version : My new Barstool Racer

Ok. I finished my go kart and ran it without brakes. Dad saw it and got glad. Then he told me he didnīt want it in the entrance of my house. He told me to take it outside. I wonīt let it stay outside rusting away (I canīt take it into my room cause everytime Iīll need to take it out I would need 4 people helping me)

Since long time ago Iīve been wanting to do a barstool. Since it has such a smaller wheelbase I decided to use the parts and build one that can easily enter the doors of my house so I can keep it on my room.

Iīm planning of making it having a maximum rear wheel to rear wheel distance at 75 cms.

Ahhh stats....It has a similar engine to Mike Beanīs one. 125 cc and somewhere between 12.5 and 17.5 hp. 5 Speed engine with clutch. Front and rear slicks. Hydraulic disc brake. 1" 9840 Steel axle (I made it). Everything is custom made except hubs of the rims and rims....Ahh and engine lol

Hereīs the pics that show what I will be working tomorrow.

Any comments gladly accepted.

I have engine geared too high. Probably it will go up to 50-60 kmph and donor bike was capable of 140. However power will be nice for when I haul things ;) probably I´ll take it to SAE´s Mini Baja competition and use it as a hauler.

Chassis is made of 1.25" 14 gauge steel. and some 3/4" too. Engine supports are .25" steel and will have some rubber bushings for vibration. I think that´s mostly all!

That's tits man. That's gonna be one fast BSR. Looks like a really good start. Now get it done and try to take more pics as you build.

Mike Bean
August 4th, 2006, 09:24 PM
I think the BSR looks like it is going to be very cool and fast!

My question is...How are you going to kick start that pig? Looks like you may have some clearance issues?!?!

Also, I noticed your shifter was pointed up. Are you going to be able to drop it down or what is you plan for it?

Mike

elvergon
August 4th, 2006, 11:46 PM
Yeah, Iīll kick start it. If I have some probelms with it, I might do a electric start for it. However same happened in my go kart (hereīs the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4Pm8o9OUog ) and Engine started with about 50 degrees of cranking.

Shifter is pointed up because I will put another tube in front of the engine paralel to the shifter. Then Iīll make a link from shifter to the tube. If I move the tube (now shifting tube) forward it will decrease one gear and viceversa. Thatīs the way I had it on my go kart. You can see it more clearly in the next pic.

Mike, what sprocket did you used in the rear? Iīm thinking of using a 40-40 (40 teeth) it has about 17 cms in diameter and according to my go kart experience I would say it went up to 50-60 kmph in 5th gear.

I can get a 33 teeth for free. Which do you think is best?
Iīm liking more the 33 cause engine will go less rev. However I wonīt take the barstool to 80kmph (welllll maybe I will ;) )

Mike Bean
August 5th, 2006, 07:52 PM
Elvergon,

I used a 28T rear sprocket with a 13T front. I would recommned going as small as you can. The combination I am running works great!

K, did a lot of working today but im dissapointed with my MIG cause fluxcore is over now :S I donīt have nothing to weld with and I donīt have money for buying a gas tank (up to now, I havenīt found anybody that leases them).

Welll now the fab....

I did almost all the frame today. Did the main chassis part but I regreted using 14 gauge steel and now did it with 1" square tube 1/8 wall (1.25 OD).

Did also the bearing hangers out of 6mm plate. Foot rests are also done with 3/4 square tube 14 ga. Also made the engine brakets out of 1/4" steel.

Had some trouble with the bearings which wouldnīt allow the 1" axle to pass through them but the dremel and some sanding paper solved them easily.

Iīll look if here in Mexico they sell flux-cored wire they better have it (even tough on Lincolns Mexico page they doesnīt seem to carry it).

The sprocket I decided to use is the 33 Teeth. A friend of mine is giving it to me but it has a 5/8 hole on it so I need to open it to 1" and make the 1/4 keyway. Iīll wait till monday for that. And so I canīt weld the engine mounts now cause I donīt know the distance Iīll be using for the chain. (lol, anyway I canīt weld till monday)

Seems I did everything I could. Tomorrow Iīll go looking for a barstool that fits my neccesities and if I canīt find one Iīll make it. After all (RUbiconīs quote) "Life is a journey, enjoy the ride"

elvergon
August 6th, 2006, 06:48 PM
LOll.....

too late for me =( summer break ends TODAY! =(

anyway I will use my school´s machines cause now my flux-core is over and I also used their machines for making the keyway on the axle and having it to 1".

I also made some custom parts over there like the bearing hangers, spindles, spindle brakets, brake disc hub, and other stuff.

UPDATE!

Finished the spindle brackets. Almost finished the whelie bar made out of .5" chromemoly and some .25" steel.

Also has some 1/4 plate welded and Tomorrow Iīll put some reinforments.

Iīm attaching it to the rear of my barstool racer which will have some 1/4 plate. Iīm tryiing to make it adjustable so I can set the wheelie height.

ANy comments gladly received.

I love the fact that you're pretty much overhaulin a gocart to make a BSR.

It's all coming together great. I have 1 Q' though. In picture 3, what's with the front end. Did you have to extend it and then re-inforce that with flat bar welded ove the 2 pieces ?

elvergon
August 15th, 2006, 11:36 PM
Lol....

nice observation

Thanks to I had one class in less than 10 mins and I wanted to leave the front end tacked I put the tube that had the spindle brackets welded to it the other way. SO when I came back I welded it all around and then I noticed it was upside down.

The best way to overcome this was to cut those 2 tubes (instead of grinding 8 welds) in the middle and weld it again the right way with some 1/4 plate around it. That won´t let it be weak in a part that it´s crucial.

Thanks for the reply =)

UPdate

I started the BS even tough it isn´t a real barstool it is a homemade one. I used 3/4 tube and 1/8 plate. It has space so I can mount the tank.

Did the engine supports and got the steering in place. I just need to weld a tube so I can hold the upper bearing. I like bearing more than bushes. Steering axle is a 3/4 solid cold rolled.

What else? I think that´s mostly all. Tomorrow I´ll add the supports for the wheelie bar setup. I´ll gusset the barstool legs to the plate and...THAT´s it I think =)

A friend of mine is doing the paint. No powder coat here (well there is 1 company that does it but I think their prices will be sooo high, I´m gonna check them out anyway)

OH well forgot about the caliper braket. I need to do that. And I woulnd´t worry much about the steering bar since I´ll be buying an used one from a motorcycle which has the levers left for clutch, right brake pump, and thumb or wrist throtle control.

After I think about it I decided I´ll shift gears with the left foot cause I have forgotten about the clutch :$. SO I don´t have 3 hands avaible.

Looking great man ! So close, so close. AND there is nothing at all wrong with building your own barstool for your BSR.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I have some double twisted 3/4" rod ( http://www.kingmetals.com/default.aspx?page=item%20detail&itemcode=60-3408-DTB) that's begging to be the legs of a barstool and i'll use chain for the foot ring.

elvergon
August 23rd, 2006, 11:47 PM
Solid rod? man that should be heavy! but safe lol

I like the twisting It will make it look cool.

I would like to see the foot ring too out of chain, it´s going to be scultural =)

Thanks for the repply =).

Ty dragbike =)

New update:

*Made the holes of the footrests made out from 14 Ga. anti-slip steel.

*Welded the front square tube that supports the upper bearing for the steering.

*Welded the caliper plate that holds it.

Left to make:

* handlebar

* the plates that support the wheelie bars.

* polish and paint it

* gusset the BS legs

I hope that I can buy the handlebars with all the equipment tomorrow So I can Fab the attatchment at school and take it to my home for polishing and priming it on the weekend.

Lol...well I actually did...almost fell off....the shifting rod was too far, and I was testing it...since steering is inverse when I pushed the rod I pulled the handlebar too (because I was standing not seated in order to get to the rod). Barstool almost flipped over and got me going on the thin line of falling for some secs....

I could handle it at last, 1 second before I was going to jump before hitting a car...

Well after that day I put some stuff on it...some are still just for making a test...but here it is a video...

It has an excesive amount of horsepower...I wonīt even hit 2nd at full throtle cause Iīm riding it on the street and any little amount of movement in the steering makes a turn instantly.

It wonīt go fast but I can turn on a dime (less than 4 m diameter) ;) with no diff

Hereīs a test I did today...Mann It feels awesome

Good Job, Take it to a drag strip and put the pedal to the metal! Put Helment on , knee pads, gloves, full body armor, antiroadrash repellant, and hold on and let it fly. Dont forget to drink plenty before attempting!!!:lush: LOL Be careful with that power until you get used to it or to drunk to care!!! Better yet let one of your drunk buddies give it a try first!

LOlololoolol

That sounds like and awesome idea...if we suppose nothing will happen to the barstool ;)

I will go to the 1/4 mile dragstrip however..thatīs the 1/4 mile nationals I think...So I donīt know if Iīll have the time for running my BSR.

Thanks for the repplies :D feels sooo good...Still need to put the muffler the way it should and torque the spark plug, since it is only torqued up with my fingers...Iīm loosing some compression there...

Hey Elvergon, We need some reports on your Racer!!! I have been watching for some . Your BSR looks great , I really like the color and the slicks...Are you still running the inverse steering? How is that working out? How fast will it run? These are just things we need to know! It turned out great , keep up the good work! Snakester:me:

I´ll take pics for you guys to check them out....

I am really offended with it...the engine clutch will no work at all so the starting (finding the neutral of the engine) is a pain in the ass...It won´t work like it should....

Also carburator is not adjusted and if you hit full throtle engine will seem to loose its power and almost turn off...

However...if you pull it slowly you´ll rev it very fast and at 5fth gear you´re flying that´s some awesome speed the one it picks up....

Yeah I´m still running the inverse =) it ain´t that bad I just remember that it is inverse and act inversely 8S

How fast? that´s a good ?! haven´t determined it yet but the engine is what makes me feel bad about it....

It ain´t finished but I don´t know if I´m going to finish it.... I might just look for another bike engine (one in a good condition!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and make another one...from nothing...I will be taking lots of camber from the settings cause a very little movement on the handlebar makes one hell of a turn...so at speed that is very scary (not enough to stop me from hitting 5fth).....

I´ll take lots of pics for you guys =) thanks for looking

I got the engine from a honda cargo motorcycle that was crashed. It cost me around 350 bucks. It is of 125 cc and the cltuch is working as in the motorcycle with the left hand lever.

Hope I answered your questions right
