View Full Version : Making a mini keg tank

Well i got a few minutes when i got home today. So i grabbed one of the mini kegs i got and made me a tank. I'll add pictures as attachments cause my webhosting seems to be buggie at times.

1 - I marked the oppisite side of the can from where the petcock/gas line will go. I'm putting that where the tap is at the bottom. This will put the cap straight up from it.

2 - I marked the center of the top of the keg where i will have to drill a hole for the bung.

3 - I use a drill with a holesaw that's 1-5/8 " as that's the size of the bung i'm using. This is very, very thin so go slow and use as little pressure as possible. Because it's so thin next time i'll use a 1-1/2" holesaw bit and run a file around the hole a few times to get a tight fit to the bung.

4 - I put about 6 layers of tape over the opening in the bung to keep splatter from messing up the threads. I used 2 magnets to hold the bung in place as i tacked it in 3-4 places. Now because this is very thin metal and i'm using a little mig with flexcore wire, everthing is on it's lowest setting. It's still very easy to burn through the mini keg. Also that tape is a waste of time now. To weld it in , i'm having to go so slow it's burning the tape up. So i've placed about a 6" long piece of tubbing that's the same size as the bung, over the bung to keep the splatter out.

5 - To weld the bung for the petcock i just held it in place and tacked it . Then welded it in all the way. It's about a inch or so long so i was not worried to much about splatter. I'm not going to use a petcock, i'll just use the gas on/off that's on the carb. IF you plan on using one, i would suggest you place the petcock fully in the bung. Hold it to the tank where you want it and face the petcock the way you wish. Mark the tank and the bung with a marker. If you don't then you will have no idea which way the location of the petcock on/off will be. I don't think this will matter much on a mini keg but, it would if you where making yours so it stood up and not sideways like this one. Then i think you'de want the on/off to be on the top.

The last pictures is showing the difference in size of the bung. The smaller one is the one i've used on this tank. The bigger of the two is the standard size used on a motocycle tank. I got this one from hushboys, they sell alot of their stuff on ebay as well as their site.

THis is the cap and bung i used :

It's still not done as i still have to weld a piece of steel over the hole that came in the top of the keg. Just ran out of time tonite.

I picked up 3 mini kegs off ebay for $3 w/ $12 shipping = $15 , I got the cap for $25 w/$5 shipping = $30. For the petcock bung i just used a 1/4" pipe nut or some places call them an extention nut. IT was like $0.15 or something close i just grabbed a hand full. So i'm under $50 but,,,,,I still have to clean and seal it. Which will cost me about another $30 but , i'll have enough to do all three kegs . But i'll have to do them at the same time as you can not reseal the sealer.

looks great man. You are one hell of a welder. I would blow a hole in mine for sure. I haven't got to mine yet. Still doing t shirts right now but when i do i'm sure i will have to braze it. I'm not that great a welder on light metal. But hey yours looks great. Are you gong to paint it or powder coat it. .
keep the pics comming.

Nice post freak. I have a couple of mini kegs like that and was kinda scared to try to weld em' up since they are so thin. Guess I'll try it now. Be sure and post some finished pics after it's mounted. :thumb:

I'm not sure i'de suggest welding with flexcore as i did. It is very thin and you can blow a hole faster then you can see it coming. I did have to chase a few burn spots. Brazing or tig would be the ticket but sometimes you have to use what you have.

To tell you all the truth the other two i'll tig. My bro-n-law is about to get a tig and my mechanice has a tig just sitting around and has told me several times i can use it anytime i need . It's just his shop is not aways feasible .

Yeah....fluxcore will be messy too and probably if you make a hole it will be hell of alot more difficult to seal it correctly due to the flux.

You can try tackwelding, which will be easier...

Of course TIGin would be the master of this...or you could do it easily with a MIG machine but running in MIG mode 100% Arg that´s for LOW LOW penetration.

Nice Job on the kegs, they look very professional.

Keep posting =)

Hey guys - I used a Coors keg the same size as yours. I took a plastic gas additave bottle like injecter cleaner and cut the neck off at an angle. This makes the filler neck stick up at an anglr for easy filling. I cut a hole in the top on left end opposite from the tap and used JB Weld to put the filler neck on. Gasoline won't detoriate the JB Weld and therefore you don't have to do any welding! I am using the original tap that came on the keg. I added a plastic neck on it with JB Weld and hooked my fuel line up perfectly. Mind you, I haven't filled it with gas yet but I'm confident it will do the job. RagRod

Looks good, Freak! Just out of curiosity, how strong are the sides? I.E., will it dent easily? TIA
