If you´re afraid of the aluminum, why not use a solid one? even thick walled (.250")......

It all depends on how far your tires are and your bearings....

i plan on keeping the bearings as close to the wheel hubs as possiable and was thinking on the .250 wall axle iam not realy worried but i just wanted to check before i do it this thing is to be all custom so there are no limits to what this is going to be. this is going to be one of two being built first one is going to be the hot rod and the secound is going to be the tow brs so i can tow the hot rod around

Why would you want to make your chassis from aluminium? anyway it is your ass.

I have been thinking about an Aluminum BSR, if done right, the AL frame can be very stiff and would look awsome if polished!! Anyone heard of Boyd Coddington? He built an all AL rodster called Aluma Tub!! If I could TIG AL to look like a pro did it, I would build one now, but I need more practice....

Billetboy - Post some pics of what you got so far....:cool_dude:

Hey Billetboy,

You know a 1" steel axle will work fine for your weight. But if you want to go aluminum, go with a 1-1/4" tubular .250. The solid aluminum axles will bend before a tubular.

I would be more worried about the frame bending than the axle. What grade aluminum are you thinking about to fab the frame with?

I recently built my BSR with a 1-1/4" axle and a 125CC 4 speed engine and it works great. I weigh 210 lbs... I didn't have to do anything special with the mounting of the axle, I set the axle up just as I have done in the past with the steel ones.

iam going to use 6061 t6 1.125 alum round tubeing for the main frame and 1 inch round for a ladder style upper bar so it would be like a ladder on its side. there is going to be lots of supports iam not worried aboout the frame its going to be over kill i just want to be differnt iam going to have lots of billet stuff on it i have a 4 axis cnc mill in my hobby shop i just want to use this mill i need toys to fill the shop up

I agree with Mike, use the 1.25 x .250 wall AL tube for your axle. We have used one on our racing kart that weighs 375 lbs total and have nothad any troubles with it. It is mounted very similar to the way my 1.25" steel axle is in my BSR.

As for the mill in your shop...I am way jealous. I only have a simple drill press....

Hey Billetboy, I have a buddy that weighs at least 350lbs. he has ridden all of Racers (1" solid steel axel...11/4" AL w/.250 wall) No problems at all. He didn't baby it either...When you are 350 lbs I guess you really can't baby it.The all ALUMINUN is a cool idea , especially having a MILL to make custom parts....Hurry up and get started so you can post some pic's.
