Hello all, This is my first post, but have been doin some homework on bsr's. I am a pipe fitter by trade so i think the build will be kinda neat! the whole frame is goin to be 1" 316 stainleess steel sch.40 pipe , using butt weld 90* & 45's for my radias's w/ 1" steel axle w/ pillow block's . Goin to put a 110cc 4 stoke w/ hope up's, manual 4 speed on her. But i still have a couple Q's to ask! 1st. i am custom building my spindle's and need to know bolt length & size for the axle 5/8's or 9/16's with a bushing ? & length of the tie rod arm ! Like i said the whole bsr will be stainless steel and i don't want to make any {OH CHIT'S} LOL Maybe some 1 could help me out with some measurement Or maybe a pic. or two of the front end ! I know i could buy a set of plan's but they are square stock , and i'm goin with pipe Thank's Bill :hammer:

Hey Billium, Cool idea with the SS Pipe...Can't wait to see some pic's...Sq. stock works and welds really easy but, the round looks much better! Are you going to use any SS mesh or maybe SS diamond plate? Are the front spindles going to be SS ? The front axle should be 5/8" x 4" or 5" with spacers if necessary ( You can widen the front end this way). I always make my own Pitman Arm , 2"-3" long. The longer it is the easier the wheels will turn. Good Luck and Welcome to this great Site!!!

I can´t remember where I heard that when you join SS with any other metal, the electronegativity of the SS makes it to weld to the other metal after some time has passed. Anyone heard about this?
You should also check out the Tensile strenght of the SS...most of them are very ductile and could bend permanently, something you don´t want. Especially when welded
As Snakester said the front axle should be 5/8",...Now I don´t have the measurements I´m sorry =( I gave some interference fit on my front spindles (I also machined them) and taking them apart would be a mess.
I ,However, machined my spindle on the kingpin side to 3/4" so the hub couldn´t slide and I didn´t use spacers. On the other side, I just put a 1/2" 13 UNC nut. I think that if you look at my thread you might see some pics on the spindles.
Good luck
(Btw...are you using TIG?)

lol , yes on the tig ! and thanks for the info.my spindle's are on the work bench now . but i would realy like sum pics of front end to see & compare what how i sould lay out the front end . was leaning towards making it like what on a shifter kart any idea's ? and as for the rest of the build , the floor board's will be polished alm.,d/p i will take some pic's when iget my damm camera workin again ,lol prioraties 1st right? lol but when done it will be compleatly polished sould stand out in the pub! thank again Bill:cheers:

Hey Bill, I put some pic's of the front spindles that I built on my last Racer. I used the axle section of standard spindles and used tie rod hyme joints to complete the front end. I can adjust the caster and camber ...This racer will run about 40 mph and handles really good at top speed...I am running 5 degrees of caster and 4 degrees of camber .Toe is at "0". The pic's are under "Another Racer" .

HereŽs a pic on the spindles I made...You will only see the 3/4 part that is welded to the kingpin. On the hub the diameter is 5/8" with some interference fit (about .002"). It is welded to the kingpin which accepts a 5/8" (I think so) bolt. On the kingpin I got 2 bearings pressed in there one top and one down, rest is just hollow...Imagine a tube with 1/4" wall which has a ID of the OD of the bearings and the bearings ID is 5/8" (as i Said if I remember correctly).
Hope this helps

Elvergon, Thanks for the pic , r u using the flat stock that has ur pillow block mounted on as a steering stop? & how much did the finish weight turn out tobe with al that plate steel? once again thank's Bill

Yo Bill, I think the heim front end is the only way to go! I know that I probably have @ 75 miles on it already. I had to change the wheelie bar wheels yesterday...All those wheelies are really hard on those wheels and on the front end too. No problems to report as of yet. I don't baby this Racer. I have a buddy that weighs over 300 lbs. and he rode it at least 5 miles today...The front end is holding up well. The heims are 7/16" and the king pin bolt is also 7/16" w/a pvc bushing. I built another frame today and I am using heims that are SS 3/8" male threads and 3/8" king pin. I will post some pic's in a couple of days. Snakester:thumb:

No Sir, no steering stop...It is just the mount for the pillow block bearing ;)....Before it was painted I cut that portion that interferes with the steering...
BTW....If youŽre planning to use a setup like mine...make sure the pitman arm is inverse....I put it infront of the steering bar (looking from rear to front) and it turned out to turn inversely (steer to the right, go to the left...) That was something I came up in a minute and did it like that. After I was done with it I noticed the change. However its fun to be different lol....

Elvergon, When I first saw that pic I noticed your steering set up...Do you drive it like that? Can't you switch the spindles and that will put the spindle arms in front to match the pitman arm? Being different is cool but, most BSR that I have ridden are a handful to control even if they steer right. Snakester:eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

I think i'm going to set up with the hemi joint's .I really like the option of being fully adjustable. I just go to see if i can find some ! think we have then at work!
Snakester, any chance of gettin a pic of a side view? Is there a offset
in the hole pattern? lmk
thank's for all the info

Hey Bill, You are right man, it is going to be a blast to build and to ride . I have built maybe 150 racing karts and at least 40 mini bikes , a 1956 GMC Custom Pickup, A 1940 Ford Pro Street , but building these Racers are the coolest....As soon as I finish one I am looking for another to build . I take my 1965 Cobra to alot of car shows and always take a couple of my Racers and 95% of the people would rather look at the Racers than the cars...Go Figure!!! Have fun building and post alot of pic's when you can ....We will all be here if you need any info!!! Snakester:cool_dude:
