View Full Version : Using barstools

Now Im not degrading ANYONE!! Why is it that builders are making there stools instead of building around a bought stool? Im just curious. Now I did build one for our mud boggin barstool, but the nicer one I built everything around the stool. Im just asking and not dogging anyone about this!! Its only a question. Glenn

I can tell you why... Not to knock anyone...
It is easier to make your own stool and add the clearances you need instead of working around what you have.
I am a firm believer a bar stool racer should be built around a real bar stool. That shows the creativity in making the parts fit. I also think you should not cut up the bar stool to make the engine fit or place half of the engine behind the bar stool. Keep it all under the stool...
Just my thoughts...I am a beer drinker by trade :Dand I wanted to make a bar stool racer with a real bar stool. Know what I mean?
I was not trying to offend anyone that builds BSR, I just like seeing a real stool on a BSR. The stool makes the racer.

Now I do cut 2 inches off the bottom legs for ours! Other than that I keep the stool untouched. I plan to ride ours into town for the upcoming festival. Mind you this town is small. Bringing your dog to town attracts people.Im riding into town pulling the trailer with a full cooler! I can just imagine the heads turning for this! lol

Stool-Sample,
Send us some pics when you go. I like the trailer idea. I have been putting together some ideas for a trailer for my BSR.

now hang on just a minute,...
... i was all enthused right off the bat with the direction that this thread was taking...but then we got into being able to "alter" an existing barstool????
I do not think so.!!
This is nowhere near as horrible as making your own barstool, which i agree is lame, but still, are we purists or not???
I say it must be a regulation, unaltered barstool, and preferably one that has seen active duty. It should have seen duty in either a beer bar or an automotive parts store, not some sissy place. When i was at the welding store i get my supplies from a couple days ago, they had ESAB barstools at their counter, but i couldn't talk them out of one of them. They were cool. In retrospect, I would say that a welding supply place counts as good as a beerbar or automotive store (like NAPA) for getting a logo barstool from.
But, this talk of sawing some inches off the legs :? , has this been sanctioned??? Who is the sacntioning body here? I am a little saddened by this.
I say that it is not really as bad, nowhere near the amatuerish building of your own. That building your own stool reminds me of those two goofs on Orange Crush Choppers or whoever those geeks,.... ehhh excuse me....GOOFS, are.
Now, i would like to express one concern about MY barstool. The only double-rung, metal, regulation look, non-home made stool i could get, has a 17"x17" base. That is a few inches too wide for my preference, but by golly I will build my BSR around it.
This thread has opened up a big culturally significant concern that we all should share.
As pioneers in BSR, can we allow non-purist junk to grace this forum??? Home-built, regulation barstools, built by guys with dirty hands, who have at least a couple open cans of beer at all times on the workshop floor. I will accept no others.

Very nice stool-sample!
A fine examply of how a bar stool should be built (using a real stool) :P

Dam, I feel Like I've been drug behind the truck with a chain for 50 miles and I know your not referring directly to me. I built my own stool because I can. I want to do one with a real stool next but I like the one I made because I made ALL of it. Every square inch of it. Like a true fabricator would.I didnt rely on plans or store bought parts ecept for the nesesities. I like mine and I like all of yours. I dont care what you use I think their all cooler than Sh!t.!

Max size about 1 meg. If it is larger than 500 pixles wide, the forum will diaplay a link instead of the image.
I would recommend saving in jpeg with a medium quality and they should look pretty good.

good stuff CJM
and no, i wasn't referring to anyone.
I got a set of plans because i wanted to get some ideas on the linkage, not the frame building. And that set of plans that i got was almost humorous in its documentation. It DID have some good 3-D Cadd graphics, but i figure everyone here should be able to fab their own base-frame. But when those plans i got came to the linkage, it said something like: "Now put in your linkage" and that was it. It was almost funny.
Alright, so a total fab it will be.!
Alright, so i will tell you now what my ideas are.
That way you can give me shit if my pics don't reflect it.
I got a nice brake system, hydraulic, but i've made a number of my own hydraulic brake systems for my bikes and I'm still alive, so that should turn out just fine.
But i don't want a front 'bumper' type thing on my BSR like those plans have, i am going to make a SMALL beer cooler for my beer up front.
And now here's the piece-de-resistance: my go-pedal and stop-pedal are going to be hand operated BEER TAPS, which I'll mount half way up the steering column. I still have to find cheap beer taps, but obviously i would use Budweiser as the GO-pedal, and Coors as the STOP-pedal I'm sure you concur with that. :) I'll run cable linkage from the GO-tap to the Tecumseh. Good idea?
So there are my plans, the small integral beer cooler (3 or 4 beers max) built into the frame, and my beer-tap controls. So thats why i kinda laughed at those plans i got. I figured i could weld a rectangular frame as good as the next idiot, i just wanted linkage ideas, but i reckon i can do those as good as the next idiot as well.
Oh,.... and as far as that... Budweiser makes you GO, and Coors STOPS you, ..
..I know i won't be hearing any argument about that now. :D

Ok thanks Mike. Now as far as cutting it down, I only did this, due to seeing some rules on height. But the more I get into these stools its like build whatever the hell you want, as long as its motorized and you sit on a stool? Right? Now as far as fabing your own, hell yes I agree. A good fabricator can and will do this. I was just under the impression, it had to be a barstool. From a bar or parts store. And FATDOG Icehouse? Oh man thats somerough stuff. For some reason that and Red dog gets me in the fightin mood. I'll stick to the girls beer I guess. Bud light. Glenn

Fatdog,
When you're building your square frame, please cut the ends at a 45 degree angle, not like thoes crappy plans from justsomeguy on EBay.
justsomeguy has justsomeplans... nothing special.. lol!
I had to throw that in... :D

I would say forget the regulations unless you are going tobe a pro BSR racer. :DI use my BSR to run in our neighborhood when I have nothing to do, or when I go to the race track as my pit vehicle.
As for the IceHouse if you drink enough of it on a regular basis, you will be able to hang with anyone at a bar.
I personally drink 1 pitcher myself everytime I go out and it really does not affect me, it's that second pitcher that does me in....

I just read the comment about a trailer. I need to get my pics "shrunk" to a size that I can post. I am a visual person and pics are always better than a feeble description. I have a dual purpose trailer. It is 22"L x 18"w x 8"d aluminum diamond tread plate. It has 11" x 5" Kart tires on polished rims. There is a curved wing spoiler on the rear and wheelie bars. When I go to swap meets I attach it to a hitch behind my electric wagon and haul a beer cooler. When hitch it to my BSR I have a matching stool that bolts in the bed and has handlebars to hold and allows a passenger to ride with me.
ps: The hitch on the BSR is hinged so the stool can do wheelies with a passenger on the trailer and not bend the drawbar...THANKS

Hell yes. Mine didn't come from a bar though.......it came from a merchandiser. Bought it on a wim, cause we were thinking about building one. Nothing is cut off of it and it fits over the 5hp briggs just fine(gas tank, air cleaner and all. What's with this crap about cuttin' 45's on the end of squared tubes? We mounted a front and rear bumper in the ends(Dwarfcar style) and put running boards all the way from the front legs of the stool to the rear bumper(should make for some REALLY long stand up wheelies.....hehehe

One of the stools I am building now will have a trailer made from a real beer keg. The top will open and the inside will have a cooler on one side and a place to put your stuff on the other.

BM1, I LOVE that quote about sliding into the grave sideeways and that line of thinking, life's to short to do otherwise.
The good, the bad and the UGLY;
Myself, I'm NOT one to follow rules/regulations and don't give a hoot whether it's a "regulation" barstool/counterstool/new/used/or fabbed stool.
I'm into overall SAFE/effective design/engineering, ergonomics and workmanship/craftsmanship, form/function go hand in hand and attention to details, I hate seeing poorly thought out chop jobs just thrown together with square sharp edges and birdshit welding. No sense building something that will result in massive bodily injuries if/when it takes a dump/spill, I see some rear wings with large square corners that'd result in serious back injuries if it went over backwards. My quote;
a halfassed effort begets a halfassed result !!
Build 'em safe then let'r rip !!

TBolt.....Thank you. It kind of fits me. Roger on the half ass stuff. Man....I see some scary stuff out there, especially on the welding end. Some folks don't realize that those bird shit welds break, and if you're going 30-40 MPH, you're going to knock a lot of bark off your ass. My opinion on wings. Wings only belong on airplanes and Sprint cars.

ok just wondering if i had the only problem here about my stool. i bought mine the other night and assembled it and it seems that i'm going to have to work the legs into place on the frame before i tack the mounts in???? is this a common problem???? or is it just me.........

Hello, I have found out that not all stools have the same leg dia. base size. Some I have found are 13.5 inch and some 15 inch. You have to spread the legs on the 13.5 to fit onto the frame of 15" wide rails. But it is not hard to fix. You just mount one side of the legs to frame and pull the others into place by one at a time. Also you might not have as much clearance for the engine as the 15" base stools. Makes a very tight fit if you use a TAV Torque converter. I found that out on my Dually BSR! Hope that helped!

I think these racers look really cool using a regular bar stool. Maybe that is what gives them a special look!!! I think it should be left to the builder and to the project at hand. It doesn't matter if you buy it or build it , just creating something that is 1 of a kind and created by you is why we do these "Works of art". As for the stool clearance...I think that it helps to turn the stool 90 degrees. I did it of my stool "Another Racer" . I used a 2 ring stool and cut the bottom ring and everything fit great!!:lush: Snakester

I'm with Thunderbolt on this one! Build it safe make it look good and power it to Fly!:hot:
I think we need to make a new set of rules and regulations for this great sport to fit out needs and creations. We can all pull together and throw out some idea's and make it happen. Then we can say " ya we got rules and reg's for the sport":thumb:
