Finally got time to start The John Deere racer frame. I have been collecting parts for a while. I am building it for a friend of mine who happens to be the parts manager at the local John Deere Dealer. He gave me the seat ,paint, some tractor parts , a J.D. bottle opener and a couple other items to use. I got most of the other parts today. I am going to use a Peerless "Diff" rear axle/ Hyd. brakes/treated tires /fenders on the rear/ I am going to build a hitch and incorperate a wheelie bar into it! I got a 13 h.p. Honda Clone w/electric start off ebay today and ordered a TAV2 from APS. Hoping to have it completed by next week. I am going to take the rest of the year off after tomorrow so I can catch up in the garage!!! Snakester:cheers: He wanted to use a steering wheel off of a 1940 something J.D. I showed him Moto'S ZZZZBars and we deceided to build a set.

Snakester Looking Good!! Like those Z Bars! Is that engine going to fit under the barstool? You will love the differential makes turning at slow speeds great! The only thing you wont be able to do is ride it up on the side 2 wheels. Looks like it is going to be a Great build. Where are you getting the diff. from? I got mine from Northern tools. Was cheaper than anyone else! I put it in my dual wheel BSR. What kind of tubing bender do you use? I want to get one but not sure which one to get yet! Keep us posted on your progress.

Yo Moto, The Z bars were easy & fun to build. I think they will work great! I did get the "Diff" from Northern Tool, I have used them on the last 3 Racers that I have built. I got my tubing bender @ Harbor Freight a couple of weeks ago . It works great and using round w/the bends saves a lot of time welding & grinding. I just think the round looks much better! You don't have to worry about my riding on the two side wheels , I'm 54 & I like all 4 on the pavement! I am going to build the stool because of the size of the 13 hp Clone . Have you ever used a TAV 2 on an engine this size? I am going to build a Cooler Trailer to pull behind and I want to have enough power w/a full load. The Clone I bought has electric start so I am going to have to put some lights on for night riding. Snakester

I wont be doing any 2 wheel turns on my dual wheel BSR but will have to do some on my other builds! I thought you would probably build the legs of your barstool due to the engine size. With that size engine, power will not be a problem to pull the trailer. What size shaft is that motor? I have not used a Tav on that size motor. Do they make one for a 13hp. If not you may have to use the Comet 40 system with a midshaft assy.If you use the regular TAV 2 you will burn it up with that engine. Keep us posted! Post some pics of the tubing bender:cheers:

Post some pics of your mill, drill, lathe and also are you going to be putting 1 1/4" axle on your differential? Would like to see some pics of your work!! I am working on 3 different BSR's know and am trying to get one built for my dad for Christmas and will probably get back on the dual wheel one after I finish His! He was just diagnosed with Cancer and has been wanting one sense I started building my dual wheeled one! He does not know I am doing this and he keeps asking if I am done with my dual wheel BSR!! Wants to Have one to run around the Airport where he spends most of his time! Later!!

NICE!! Good Job!! Sure helps to have the right tools for the job!! I have a New 10 X 27 Gearhead Lathe I am learning to use! I used the peerless diff also but put 1 1/4" axles on the axles of diff. Is your brake rotor mounted to diff housing and also on right axle or just on right axle? If it is just on axle and not bolted to diff housing it will only stop right side axle!! It will pull to one side when brake is applied! Just cant tell by pics. Great looking so far and keep us posted!!:thumb:

Progress on The John Deere Racer has stopped!!! I got most of the parts last week... The Brake caliper was back ordered! I ordered a fender to cut in half ...It was wrong! Bought a Clone 13 hp. won't get it until 12/15. The TAV 2 ...for the 1" shaft won't get here until 12/18. I got the frame to a roller yesterday ...It just doesn't sit right, It needs bigger tires on the rear...I am thinking about a set of 22x11.5x8 's directional tires off of an ATV...Might be to big but I think I am going to get them any way and see!:dizzy: Didn't have anything that I could do today , so I cut out 2 more Frames , will do some welding tomorrow!!

Well I got the Sterling 13 HP Clone yesterday...The engine is so big I deceided I had better build a little bigger and heavier frame. I am going to need a little more space to fit the motor w/ TAV in the right place . I also need room for a battery box. The new frame has a wheel base of 38" and the width is 20". I am looking for a bigger set of tires for the rear...It needs them to make it set right.:lush:

Be sure to let us know how that Sterling motor does. That's the same motor I'm looking at for my parade vehicle.

I have had real good luck out of the sterling engines!! They seem to be real good! Have not had any problems with them yet! I have used three of them so far!:thumb:

The Sterling Engines seems to really run well...I bought one 5.5 hp... in June and put it on an Emglo Air compressor that we run about 35 hrs./week. We haven't had any problems at all. They cost 1/3 the price of a Honda. I have used several Clones and they all run good. My buddy just bought an 11 hp Sterling and put it on his kids Go Kart...That thing flies!!!I have been working on The John Deere Racer frame today and hope I finish it by Sunday...I got a battery for it ....can't wait to start it with not having to pull start...This getting old ain't what it is cracked up to be. Snakester ...Let me know if anyone has had any experience w/a 13hp w/elect. start...Any issues that I should know about?

Had a little time to work on the frame today...The 13 horse Engine is so wide w/the TAV mounted ....A lot of clearance issues especially using the Diff rear axle. Worked on the steering shaft and steering support and mounted the Z bars....They look pretty cool. Still waiting for the rear tires purchased off Ebay. Will work some more tomorrow. :thumb: Snakester

hey man,
I like how you worked the hitch in. Are you gonna pull a plow with that thing, or trailer your drunk buddies home from the bar. My wife says I have too many trailers (only 4, can't have too many things to pull you stuff around on) she would wonder what I was up to if I had a hitch like that on mine.
Nice work!

Thanks Guys for all the nice comments. I did put the hitch on to pull a trailer...I am building this for a buddy of mine who works at the local John Deere Dealer...He is trying to purchase a J.D. Trailer he saw in an old catalog , if not I guess we will have to build one . He is into Antique Tractors and wants this to take to shows...I think the truth is he needs some way to carry the Beer Cooler.:lush:

I am making a few changes on the J.D.Racer. I don't think the Peerless Dif will hold up! It is rated for 8hp. I am using a 13hp Clone/TAV2 12T/ 54T Sprocket /1" Chrome Moly solid axle/ 18"x8"x8" Lug1 rear tires...My buddy just completed a Jacked up golf cart w/11hp Clone /38" Peerless rear w20"x10"x10" Knobby Tires...He broke the rear axle in 30 minutes!!! I hope my set up will stay together ...What do you think? Should I go to a different rear sprocket?:dizzy: Snakester

well if it is rated for 8hp...maybe you want to change it before breaking it!

unless you don´t care and wanna try out :D

I'm running a peerless diff. on my mini car, it's rated for 10hp. I have a 12hp running through a trans, I was so worried about the diff. busting that I got 2 of them. I have a 42 sprocket on it with 22 inch tires. I've busted the trans already but the diff. hasn't given me any problems. The wheight of a barstool compared to lifted golf cart is a big difference. I'm not saying that you won't bust it but mine has taken ALOT of abuse and hasn't busted, knock on wood, yet.

I have found that if you put extra bearings and hangers on the Diff that it reduces the chance of it breaking the diff. If you put 2 on each side of the diff housing it will stiffen it up more than just 2 on one side a one one the other. The less flex at the inside gears the less breaking occurs. I have seen them hold up with 13.5 hp engines and I have seen them busted with 5hp motors. The best prevention is a good installation. Also how you drive it can reduce breaking it. DO NOT go on snow,Ice,Mud etc.. and spin with a lot of RPM's and hit a hard traction surface! You will gut the diff. Watch your rpm's when going from a slick surface to a good traction surface. Just my 2 cents worth and Post some pics! LOL:thumb:

Good point Moto, when you set up your diff. you need to run 4 bearing hangers. If I had a pic of mine handy I would show it to you. With out the extra hangers the diff. WILL bind under heavy load and bust. There great to have, makes it alot easier to control the steering compared to a live axle. The down side is it's alot harder to do donuts.:bigcry:

Finally had some time to work on The J.D. Racer...Did most of the fab work on the front , just a couple more things to do there. Fabricated the "stool" to get over the 13 hp Clone. I got my rear tires today and put them on the wheels. I still have to fab a battery box and am going to add some aluminum diamond plate in a few places. Let me know what you think of the rear tires. A buddy of mine likes the look ,but said they just don't look like they fit on a BSR. O well!!!

Looks Good. The rear tires look like they would be good for a BSR puller or mud bogging. Nice traction tires! I like the front fairing you got fabbed on! The stool looks great also! Good Job!:thumb:

Good job!

I made a little progress today on The John Deere Racer. I worked some on the sheet metal on the front end and deceided to fabricate a bumper for the front. I also made some supports to go behind the seat , I think it gave it the go kart look . Hope to finish the fab work tomorrow !:lush:

Looks good snakester! Like the Z Bars! Front bumper looks great. You probably needed that support for the seat with the torque your going to have. It would be bad to snap off the legs with a Quick takeoff! LOL:laughing: Keep up the good work!:thumb:

Looks Great!:hot: I like the back tire set up! I made a pair of z bars and I was wondering what angles did you use to cut them into shape with?

Snakester
January 5th, 2007, 09:08 AM
Hey Woodchuck, I went the simple way , I cut every angle on a 45 degree , I have a barrel full of short scrap pieces and I had a lot of pieces already cut on a 45 . I want to build more z bars and this is a great way to use up this scrap!!!:me:

Ya I have the same barrel full of scrap. Lots of 4 and 5" pcs. with one angle cut on them.
