It looks like a briggs type motor a 5.5hp or a briggs raptor motor If this is the case all ya need to get is another flywheel housing or better yet just get the recoil starter peace. and take the old one off and replace it with a new one. But's kinda hard to tell what ya got with that pic, post another one of the other side of the motor and we will be able to tell ya then.

woodchuck is right, looks like and Briggs Raptor (old style Flat Head motor). Really need to see the other side.
DO NOT RUN REGULAR GAS in it if the previous owner said it tool alchol. The carb jetting is set to run on METHANOL (alchol racing fuel).
You should be able to get a recoil set up from a local lawn mover repair shop that whould allow you to pull start it. The end sticking out from the flywheel should be a square that is a one way clutch. That is the part the recoil slides over.

I would guess that if the engine was running on methanol that they probably used a starter motor to start the thing. It sucks to start a methanol engine with a pull start.

I am usually able to get my race motor on methanol to start on the first pull. A few times I have had it take more, but usually starts easily.

DO you still have the motor? If so, would you like to sell it?
