ive seen alot of guys here use the necks from bikes. i got a cut up bike i use to ride till the repair cost got more that i paid for it new. i got a ton of old bike junk around for steering stuff. i was wondering if anyone had some detailed instructions or lotts of step by step pictures on building the steering setup with a bike neck.
if worse comes to worse ill use small pipe or round tube for my steering shaft and make a sleeve for it and use the top and lower pitman arms to hold it onto the sleeve.
sofar all these are brain ideas and some paper. i have the back part of my frame built, im just waiting for money to buy parts so i can get that back built then do my front.

I had the same idea in the beginning of using bike steering head and fork spindle. The idea was soon scrapped for more practical designs. What my experience is that whatever is used should be rigid and not flex. This suggests a support near the top of the steering shaft triangulated off the stool and one on the frame. I started with a 3/4" thin walled steel tube for the shaft and scrap nylon blocks for bushings. I could not live with the flex and eventually ended up with 3/4" solid steel shaft. the top has a mountain bike stem and handlebar. The stem has a hardware store bronze bushing (split so it will compress) to fit the shaft to the stem clamp. On the bottom I have a 1/2" aluminum pitman arm with 2 holes for tie rod fastening ( Ackerman ). The most important thing is I have the arm pinned into the shaft so nothing can slip and prevent steering....good luck

hey thanks for the reply.
yea the bike parts idea was getting to hard to get done. i think it will be easyer to fabracate something with little pitman arms. i might either go with a T bar or steering wheel. if i do T bar i might bend and make something that looks cool, rather than just some bike handelbars.
now time to find some green backs to get parts for my bsr.

hey I had the same idea . i like the smooth bearings. I made my steering shaft out of 7/8 cold rolled steel bar. It fit right in the bike neck. And it also fit my steering wheel that came right out of a VW bug. It wasn't hard and you really don't have that much of a turning radius but I get a lot of comments on it.

im still not sure about the bike neck.... i think the best thing to do is if i keep toying with the bike neck idea, id better go round up all the parts.
